New Mexico! Lucky guy. Another one of my many stops in life. Does he live in town or one of the 'burbs?

I suggested the route I did because I always go south first in the Winter.

If you do the east Coast of Texas drive that Art Pear suggested, once you get to Corpus Christi head west on Texas 359 to Freer then take U.S. 59 to Laredo. once you leave Laredo head northwest on I 35 to where U.S. 83 goes west to Del Rio and over to Big Bend Ranch State Park. You will also be able to go to Marfa Texas and you might get to see the Marfa Lights.

In town - near old Rte 66, which apparently doesn't have much appeal these days.

Also a great time in Bosque NM at the preserve for birds.

Is February a good time for that? I've seen magnificent photos of the migrating birds there.

I thought that too. I would love to go to Alaska, but a road trip on a budget from North Carolina?

The cranes were in residence in December.

Thank you Architect1776 for both of your answers. I will take the more southern route for sure.

Here are some great and most excellent I10 things.
1. Las Cruces, NM actually Historic Old Mesilla in Las Cruces. The Double Eagle restaurant has most excellent New Mexican food a must stop as Billy the Kid was there.
2. Then up to Hatch, NM
3. Then definitely Silver City, NM absolutely a fascinating place.
4. Ft. Bowie National Historic Site, AZ.
5. Tombstone, AZ.
6.Bisbee, AZ Stay at the beautiful Copper Queen.
7. Take 82 to Nogales and cross the border for fun.
8. North on 19 to Tumacacori Mission then San Xavier mission.
9. Lots on Google in Tucson.
10. Old Tucson movie studio.
11. Saguaro National Park.

There is so many other places but these are easily accessed and traveler friendly.
I use a Jeep and in all these areas there are literally hundreds of absolutely incredible side trips but on dirt roads needing a higher clearance.

5. Of course, Tombstone is home of the infamous "OK Coral", a true tourist trap these days

6. If I Recall Correctly, we saw a beautiful {and probably seriously toxic} water-filled open-pit mine in the Bisbee area.

If you go into Tombstone with an open mind knowing it's a tourist trap and you'll have to pay for that, you can have a hell of a good time!

Thank you jethro, those sound like excellent suggestions for en-route options!

Looks great, thank you. I have an SUV with fairly high clearance, but it's only front wheel drive.

Thanks, I'll definitely check out Tombstone. This last trip I went to Deadwood, SD at a time that was a big event with main street closed with free concerts and what seemed like a million people and I had a lot of fun even though the event was a total surprise when I arrived.

Tombstone is a tourist trap.
The stores are fun, there are wonderful restaurants and the courthouse is a must visit. Take the stage coach just to see how miserable they would be on a long trip.

The Bisbee open pit mine was the largest open pit copper mine in the world at one time.

There id a beautiful Jeep road from Bisbee to Nogales right on the border.
Here is a shot of the border fence in the background. As you can see not much there. The Monument is right on the US side.

Wonderful and beautiful road but I did carry a rifle and pistol for protection.
