I just discovered that I have lost over 500 images. They where part of a research project that I did on a small lake up in Wisconsin. I found out a person put a bug in my system and has been mining image .I do not know what to do. I know what I would like to do but I don't want to spend the next twenty years behind bars. I know the person who put the bug in my computer. How do I get the proof that I need to take to the proper people? Can anyone help?

How do you know the person that was mining your images ?

If you know that, you have the proof.

They were there less than a month ago and now no where to be found. I did a search of images by computer date, subject matter and place and nothing. Who do you go too with this type of problem?

You have not answered the question I asked. You are accussing someone of bugging your computer but can't state under what conditions or the type of bug.

Are you sure you just didn't mess up yourself and now looking for a way out ? Are you responsible to a contract for them or an employer ?

There are programs that search your hard drive for deleted files and it's easy if you know the file name used.

no I am not try to find a way out,I am not under contract to an employer or anyone else. But the images that I had were going to be used for my personal use. To give to my children when I pass so they would have something from there dad. It would be up to them what they would do with the images. If they wanted to sell them it would be up to them. So each image that is gone is possible funds out of there pockets.

If you know the person, contact the authorities, police ? Make charges and see if the images can be retrieved.

Stop - take a deep breath - get a software for retrieving photo files - run it to retrieve "ALL" photo files on your hard drive.
I think this will solve your problem.
IMHO

This is one of the reasons why I miss Negative/color reversal film, you have a tangible image that's not digital. :)

You still havn't answered the question sarge asked, how do you know these to be a fact:
"I found out a person put a bug in my system and has been mining image ."

"I know the person who put the bug in my computer."

File recovery software is your best hope at this point but it is also a reminder to all of us to make backup copies of any files that we don't want to lose. If your hard drive crashed and quit working, then the files would be gone forever assuming you don't spend a large fortune on a recovery service with uncertain results. I have lost 3 or 4 drives in desktop systems over the years. It happens.

There are also ways to detect trojans on your system that are more involve than just a virus check. How do you know that this person "placed a bug" on your computer? Did this person have unsupervised access. Could the pictures have been manually removed at the time? Is your computer behaving abnormally? You need more than a gut suspicion. Who else has access to the computer? Is it online? There is also forensic software used by law enforcement to find evidence but that's a whole different topic.

Come on people, we have to set aside this interesting topic for awhile. Read back, Wild About is at a craft fair today and can't respond to your online interrgation. Now I know, I'll most likely hear about this. But I think George Bush hacked his computer and made off with the files.
