I'm waiting for a pocket-size FF compact with a 100 MP sensor.

That might sound impossible, but just you wait! : )

Does not seem unrealistic to me at all. Where there's a will, there's a way!

A few studies in the last year have shown that (for newer sensors) the amount of additional noise that you get from doubling the pixel count is almost zero.

As a result, the camera companies dramatically increased the pixel count. This lets the user decide how many pixels they want, and gives us files that are more versatile to work with. It is an added benefit with almost no down-side, other than to your wallet.

Why did Sony make the a7IV with 61 MP, just plain pixel dumping looks like.

The a71v was made for photographers who think that more pixels are everything, don't get me wrong, if a photographer fells better shooting with a high mp camera and loves to pixel peep... that's fine. In my opinion, the 5 year old Sony a6000 is a great all around camera, it performs as well as the a7RII at less than one sixth the price. Just saying pixels aren't everything, it comes at the expense of other factors.

The greater the mega pixels the better the dynamic resolution at the expense of higher ISO. Basically in the Nikon world the D850 which sports a 46MP sensor has better dynamic resolution than the D750 which sports a 24MP sensor, however the D750 has better high ISO performance than the D850.

Thats it! I’m going to wait till they come out with at least a 300 megapixel camera!

Canon made their 51 mp cameras when the Sony standard was 36mp.

How many people can tell the difference between a print from a 24 mp body and from a 50 mp body? Maybe projected on the side of a 4 story building... but I doubt it. We seem to be in the era of “Pixel” envy. Who cares?

The one advantage I see to 50mp is that user can crop more, but s/he loses graceful higher ISO performance; I prefer the ISO performance, but Canon does sell those cameras.

We are on the same page. But... the only crop I ever make would be to fit the paper size. (i.e. trimming the edges of a 2x3 sensor format on a 13x19” print. My motto from training is fill the frame. If you can’t, get closer, change lenses, or forget it.

I don't disagree - but I know from experience how difficult it is to fill viewfinder with darting BIF.

I am in agreement with Ken Rockwell. I have seen beautiful enlargements made from using a Nikon D700 with only 10 Mp.

It looks like the next Canon EOS R Will Have Higher Resolution Than Sony a7R IV according to Canon Watch.
Canon itself has confirmed a new high res. camera this year.
The discussion is that it will be a 75-80 MP (Canon Rumors) camera. Canon says it will be "beyond" the a7R IV.
Looks like Canon is innovating in the sensor area.
This will be interesting to see.

They were already showing a 100mp FF sensor as well as a 100mp APC sensor a few years back in one of their shows. But this one is going to be a bit lower in count!

Your wait is over for more than 20 years! It was not 300, but 420!

Then why such a rush to get the camera?

They have shown a 250 mp sensor and the resulting photos using EF L lenses off the shelf.
