We had a teacher who frequently said "every time I open my mouth some fool speaks."
Another good one Bill. Thanks.
Teachers should never put down their students.

I agree wholeheartedly - my experience was that certain teachers got some form of sadistic pleasure out of highlighting the flaws of their pupils - I wonder whether was it because they had some need to continuously demonstrate their intellectual superiority (as it appeared in their own minds )
Who could resist asking such a question?

I survived an all boys boarding school in Jamaica back in the late 50's.
You were not really considered one of the group until you had received your 6.
If you messed up bad enough for it to be in front of the class, it gave you more status.
We still screwed around, we were just very aware of the cost of being caught.

Good question, kid!
Speaking truth to power and questioning authority is usually a worthwhile endeavor, if done politely, discretely, and respectfully. It can be scary, but often results in something really good.

These days they would get fired for saying something like that.
