Yes, it worked. Thanks for that. I had never heard of Blue Note Records, but I have heard of the Blue Note Jazz Club in Manhattan.
Thanks for that! Love my Blue Train. Great that they tried to work in every decade.

Thanks, Jerry. I did check the link, but I subscribe to NYTimes digital, so it will always work for me.
Just watched (again) the (Netflix) documentary ("I Called Him Morgan") about Lee Morgan(leader and trumpeter on the The Sidewinder album mentioned in the article). He was shot & killed by his wife in a famous NY jazz club (Slugs) in 1972. He was 33.

Yes, I recall Blue Note Lable. Jazz was with skill back then and so much modern stuff is just noise and trying to make sense of it is futile. Old Jazz one could hear the based melody in the music eg: How High the Moon ... you could hear the original with greatly skilled musicians adding sprinkles on top.
Foregive Jerry... for never having heard of the Blue Note label.... living in the Catskill Mts of NY is just an extension of Appalachia... they only recently introduced shoes to the population. But the Blue-Grass was wonderful.

Thanks for the response. Jazz changed/adapted from swing to bebop in the late 40's & early 50's. It was created and explored by Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Clifford Brown and a few others. The early musicians who created it, wanted to showcase their improvisation abilities in complex chord structures and melodies. Many were uptempo. One's ear had to be trained to "hear" the melody within the improvisation. I always hear the melody.

Also Blue Note in Chicago. They had a section set aside for teenagers. Saw all the greats before I was 18

That was cool! I went to Birdland, Village Gate, Metropole, Village Vanguard, Half Note, ... in NYC. At Birdland there was a "gallery"along one side of the stage. It was $2 to sit there. 6+ hours of continuous music. The stage revolved. When one group was ending their set and revolving to their exit, the next one was entering. All for $2.

Some great music here. I listened to jazz at The Five Spot and The Half Note in Greenwich Village of the 50's.

Nice find, Mark! I especially like the early recordings. Maiden Voyage was my introduction to the whole new world of Herbie. Thanks for posting this.
I'm envious Mark, of your chances to go to those great NYC jazz clubs. Great experiences, no doubt.
Mark, an old friend of mine ran the Vanguard Orchestra after Mel died. I lived with Dick Oatts just before he moved to NYC. Mel took Dick under his wing when Dick first arrived, and Mel and Dick became great friends. Dick lives in Philly now, and is still with the band much of the time, but I think most of the responsibility of running it has been passed along to others in the band.
