Crop factor question

Need clarification please. The new Sony RX100 vii coming out lists its lens as a 24-200mm 35mm equivalent. How does that compare with, for example, a Sony a6500 with the 18-135mm lens. Is the 18-135 the 35mm equivalent or is it 24-200mm 35mm equivalent because of the 1.5x crop factor.

The a6500 has a crop factor of 1.53. So 135 X 1.53 = 206.55

I don't actually know if that 135 mm figure is actual or is based on 35 mm format. I suspect the latter. It's a shame that there isn't a more clear way to state focal length.

The 18-135 is equivalent to +/- 24-200 FF angle of vision.

The word 'equivalent' would be the giveaway here. Any lens used on a crop sensor camera would have an equivalent focal length when compared to a FF camera but the actual focal length would be whatever is marked on the lens. In this case that would apparently be 18-135. To me, that's slightly deceptive advertising unless the actual focal length is clearly stated.

Unless you take two picture of the same subject with two camera and identical lens from the same tripod at the very same time, how in hell can you tell the difference
I’ve always took crop factor as crap factor created by some publicity shop

Since there are several, maybe even many, hoggers who have and use both FX and DX equipment, that sounds like a project someone might take on. Might even put that debate to rest - probably not, some just never end 😈😈😈

Lenses for the A6500 are stated in actual focal length. So the 18-135mm lens on the A6500 is equivalent to 27-202mm on the 35mm camera. So compared to the RX100 it's not as wide as the RX100 on the wide end.

Sony RX100 is a full frame camera. Sony a6500 is a cropped sensor camera.

I thought that RX100 is has a 1 inch sensor, which is significantly smaller than full frame.

The Sony RX1 series is their full frame. The RX10 and RX100’s are 1” sensors.

Correct. I should always have my second cup of coffee before answering.

Lol! I think you’ve helped enough people out here that we can let that slip! Hahaha!

Focal length is focal length no matter what camera. Magnification remains the same. The field of view does change. In other words what's in the picture changes as if you had digitally zoomed.

If cameras all had the same sensor size, well then …. But the variations require some way to compare apples,p to oranges so we have crop factor to render them all as fruit, or pomes, or drupes, or whatever. "Full frame equivalent" is one of those dinosaurs that us other dinosaurs understand but is a bit confusing in this age of sensor war.
