We got out to look around and there below was this little fellow. I must admit that I enticed him to open his mouth by dropping a stick next to him. Before anyone says anything about the out of focus leaves in the foreground, I know it's a photographic cardinal sin. I've done many stupid things when trying to get a good shot, but there was no way in hell I was going down there to move the leaves out of the way! Although with a better camera and the leaves out of the way, I think it would have made a dandy photo.

Well captured Ken! The white mouth is a dead give away.

This is great, and I like that you had to annoy the snake to get it to open its mouth. They really would rather be left alone (and isn't it telling that those most often bitten by venomous snakes are inebriated males!). I once took so many photos, also featuring out-of-focus leaves, of a small black-tailed rattlesnake that it stopping rattling and actually looked bored with the whole sequence, looking past me at a hillside where my dog was making a wide arc around it to get past. The snake totally ignored me; its head just followed the dog, tongue flicking.

Great download and scary. Thank you.
OMG. Great shot. Background helps focusing on wide opened mouth and its clarity.
Excellent shot. Damned the leaves -- Safety comes first. The download is terrific. Mahalo for sharing.

And I don't care what anyone says, those mean little bastards WILL chase you. Seen it happen way too many times growing up on the San Jacinto river.
I like the leaves being there. They make the picture more dramatic because they show the snake is real and not in a zoo. Yikes!

Great shot. Subject is right on; the leaves indicates a smart person & frame it [him, her] well.
