I need to ask for the group's help and you might have some fun helping.

A friend's daughter is finishing her masters project that involves measuring how well people can identify images that have been manipulated. She has a survey where you check whether an image is untouched, enhanced or manipulated.

There's quite a few images and you don't get a score at the end....your participation is out of the kindness of your heart to help a student. I'm asking board members to take the quiz and pass the link to others. She needs 2,000 completed to get the sample size she needs.

Thank you all...

Below is a link that explains it and that page has a link to the quiz.

i mam not going to take the test but I will say this. A well done manipulation, professionally done of an image can not be identified as a "fake". Virtually all photographs in magazines, fashion or sports is fiddled with in one way or another, does that make them "fake"? Is minor cropping "fake" What about lighting? Is using reflectors "Fake"? Flash?

Lighting and cropping is not fake.
Cutting and pasting is.

Define “manipulation”. In Post does it mean: Adjusting exposure? Adjusting contrast? Saturation? Etc.

Seems like kind of a silly question at some levels. Even a SOOC jpeg is “manipulated” by the way the way the manufacturer thinks the JPEG should look, or the photographer sets the jpeg ‘adjustments’ in their camera for capturing the “original” SOOC image.

On the other hand, if you’re referring to “journalistic” standards, a different discussion is relevant. In those situations, even a small change in the shooting angle of the original image capture can dramatically ‘manipulate’ the impression communicated by the image.

I think what she's looking for are:

Enhanced - exposure, saturation, etc (not even as far as a crop)

Manipulated - adding or removing elements and such

I agree that the parameters are vague....maybe intentionally.....don't know. I don't think there are images that have thing like a power line removed. The manipulation I saw was more rudimentary than that.

I believe it's a project intended to illustrate a point and is not meant to capture all the nuances of "manipulation". For manipulation, think fraud and fake vs artistic decisions.

If as you read above that people don't understand what qualifies the photo into a specify category the results will not make a valid sample. If once turned in the reviewer feels the definition is not clear it will get less credit. The time to consider it is up front before taking samples.

I know, right? I gave her feedback to include fewer images but it was too late. There was also discussion on the categories of enhanced and manipulated and how vague the terms are with a lot of gray area.

It's part of a project for her Master's Degree at RIT. On the surface it's about spotting images that are blatantly manipulated to the point of being fake or fraudulent (not in artistic terms) but I don't pretend to know the hypothesis the data will try to support or refute.

Thanks for helping.

The photo of the 5th of July dog would qualify. I spotted the manipulation immediately. But look at one of Serge Ramelli's landscapes or city views: I know they've been manipulated (focus layers, exposure layers, focus blending), but it's done masterfully. The uneducated viewer would just think it's wondrous. In this case, ignorance IS bliss.

She doesn't even explain what 'swipe' means, or whether it is even possible on a computer rather than a phone.

Reuters and BBC are dishonest by lying about sources of photos, by presenting staged photos as 'real,' and in other ways.

When I load the survey, it goes through a quick tutorial about swiping and also directs users to the buttons at the bottom that can be used in lieu of swiping.

Interesting exercise. Probably missed on most! I think answers come from your background - example, I enhance (develop) all my pictures, so that would be my default choice. I never manipulate, it's a waste of time and does not really capture what I was after. As a result, I only spotted blatant changes, like the flying horse. Original was selected when the picture was not good :)

Nothing is more frustrating on line than trying to do a survey but the survey buttons DO NOT WORK!!
I tried three different browsers (including Chrome), but the survey format is just awful.
