Light room keeps crashing. A lot of the time it just crashes as soon as it starts other times after a couple of minutes it had been working pretty well. Windows 10 16 gigs of ram.

The most common cause of Lightroom crashes comes from the GPU. Try going to Preferences and de-select the GPU. It may be a driver conflict. Getting an updated video card driver might help too.

Tim Grey sends out a daily email on photography. Today's had this in it.

"When there are unusual display issues or crashing with Lightroom Classic, it is a good idea to turn off the use of the graphics processor (GPU) as a troubleshooting step. In Lightroom Classic you can find this option in the Preferences dialog. Go to the Lightroom menu on Macintosh, or the Edit menu on Windows. Choose Preferences, and then navigate to the Performance tab within the dialog. Turn off the "Use Graphics Processor" checkbox, close the dialog, and restart Lightroom."

If applicable, disconnect your Android phone from a USB connection to the computer before starting LR.

Naive question:
If the GPU is turn off what other issues or delays does that cause with Lightroom and is it only limited to LR.
If none, why is it an option?

Does turning it off effect any other programs?

The GPU settings within Lightroom are for Lightroom only.

Use of the GPU can help speed up certain functions of Lightroom, but it can also cause issues.

FWIW: Lightroom on my iMac seems to run smoother with my GPU off, but other programs like Topaz A.I. run fine with the GPU use - Photoshop runs better for me using the GPU.

Be sure you have the latest driver updates for your video card or graphics processor. Older drivers can be incompatible with newer operating systems and Lightroom.

I had this issue initially on my Mac. A new OS update cured it.
