So, I am thinking about upgrading to a better quality Nikon DSLR, however, I own several DX lenses that I am not willing to give up using on the new one. Please recommend an upgrade from a D7100 that will accept DX lenses…………thanks!
First off, please ignore the comments about the D500 being the choice if you take action photos. It is, of course, but that is not the reason to buy it. Besides taking photos equal to those you can get from a D850, the main benefit is that it offers the professional control system.
Unlike consumer grade cameras, once you get it set up, you can make essentially every adjustment necessary in the field or studio via the physical controls on the camera. It is rarely necessary to use the menus while shooting.
It also offers Highlight Weighted Metering, which prevents blown highlights and delivers almost all of the benefits of Exposing to the Right without having to learn most of the details of "how."
Low light and high ISO performance is as good as you would want. I routinely shoot at ISO 6400 at night, and have used 12800 and higher with good results. It's certainly not the same as shooting at an ISO of 200, but then, it's not supposed to be.
If you care about video, it provides all but a couple of the very latest formats and options.
If you are worried about the cost of the XQD card, please note that you can set the D500 up with the SD card as primary, and with a couple of button strokes can swap to the XQD if necessary. I'm set up that way, so I use a smaller XQD card and a larger SD card. My rare videos always go to the XQD.
Also...tthe D500 is not a titanium alloy camera. It is constructed mostly of composite. So it is not as heavy as you might expect. To me, it feels "just right" to handle.
Good luck with your search.
