Upgrade from D7100 with DX lenses

I tried out a D500 in the store just to see what the fuss was about. I have to admit it was an amazing camera. The speed and accuracy of autofocus in relatively low light was the thing that stuck out in my mind.

The D7100 is a good camera, and the autofocus is good enough for almost every use. But if you want something that you can occasionally use as a sports camera, even in low light, then you can't really go wrong with the D500.

First off, please ignore the comments about the D500 being the choice if you take action photos. It is, of course, but that is not the reason to buy it. Besides taking photos equal to those you can get from a D850, the main benefit is that it offers the professional control system.

Unlike consumer grade cameras, once you get it set up, you can make essentially every adjustment necessary in the field or studio via the physical controls on the camera. It is rarely necessary to use the menus while shooting.

It also offers Highlight Weighted Metering, which prevents blown highlights and delivers almost all of the benefits of Exposing to the Right without having to learn most of the details of "how."

Low light and high ISO performance is as good as you would want. I routinely shoot at ISO 6400 at night, and have used 12800 and higher with good results. It's certainly not the same as shooting at an ISO of 200, but then, it's not supposed to be.

If you care about video, it provides all but a couple of the very latest formats and options.

If you are worried about the cost of the XQD card, please note that you can set the D500 up with the SD card as primary, and with a couple of button strokes can swap to the XQD if necessary. I'm set up that way, so I use a smaller XQD card and a larger SD card. My rare videos always go to the XQD.

Also...tthe D500 is not a titanium alloy camera. It is constructed mostly of composite. So it is not as heavy as you might expect. To me, it feels "just right" to handle.

Good luck with your search.

The D7200 and D7500 are both DX, and both good cameras. It's a question of cost and features. The D500 has been disconued.

I just did a quick search. Nikon makes no reference to the D500 being discontinued. B&H shows it as in stock. I saw yesterday that my local dealer has two brand new ones on the shelf...

Just my biased opinion,

D7100 > D7200 > D500

D5300 > D7500

D3300 > D5500

Nikon went backwards with their new models

Why are you telling me? I already own a D7200 and a D500. The D500 isn't a successor to the D7200, they serve different purposes. Where the D500 is an excellent sports, wildlife and action camera, the D7200 is much better at photographing events, especially indoor, and stationary subjects, and general photography.

I agree with everyone that suggested the D500. I upgraded to it a few months ago to keep using my DX lenses. It’s great in low light and focuses quickly.

The D500 also excells at indoor, stationary, and general photography.

Here are a couple of things I got for my D500. If you get a D500, you might look at these. The eyecup helps to eliminate stray light coming in from the side that can cause glare on the eyepiece. It also creates a little more space between the LCD screen and the photographer's face. It takes a bit of work to get it on. You have to use the threaded core from the original eyepiece and mount the eyecup and retaining ring on it.

If you get this be sure to close the eyepiece shutter on the camera when you're working on it. Closing the eyepiece shutter will prevent dust from getting into the pentaprism area.

The deluxe hot shoe cover is a two-piece construction. The large rubber top portion completely covers the hot shoe. That's good if you're caught the the rain. It will prevent rain from getting on the electrical contacts and possibly seeping in past the contacts..

You will be happy for the rest of your life. Or until Nikon issues a new model.
