Thanks for this great story.

My father was a WWII veteran who served in North Africa and Europe (this I believe but with the fire is St Louis and records destroyed I can't be positive) but he never ever mentioned any war stories.

Great story. My Dad was a photographer in the Navy in WWII in the South Pacific. He only told stories of the good times they had. He never mentioned the pictures he had to take to document the war. They were the greatest generation and deserve our respect and thanks for our freedom.

Thanks to all WWII vets! And thanks to all the other vets who put their names on the line and vowed to serve this great country - no matter what the ultimate cost would be. My brothers & sisters.

Semper Fi right back at you Marine and to all brothers and sisters as well. Those who have never been there have absolutely no idea what it is like.

Dennis I enjoyed both your post and the replies. This brings something to my mind. I think that this story would resonate with folks on all sides of the political spectrum from the left to the right. Those who were in the "Greatest Generation" gave birth to all of us, liberals and conservatives. They had their political differences but I don't recall it being as personal and rancorous as it is these days. I think we are more divided as country as we have been at any time since before the Civil War. How can we regain a sense of common purpose of the nation that our parents and grandparents held and believed in? I know there will always be questions to be argued and points of views to be debated, that's the way it should be. Do you remember the Civil War series by Ken Burns? There is a scene of a re-enactment of the battle of Gettysburg. The old veterans, both Union and Confederate are marching across the battlefield toward each other when the script gets thrown out the window and they drop their weapons and run to each other hugging their former enemies and celebrating their common experience. Can you imagine that sort of thing happening years in the future between the left and the right of today? I am asking this seriously and am not looking for potshots and snide remarks from either side of the political spectrum. What do you think?

I am glad to have shared the post and, like you, have enjoyed the replies and thank everyone for replying.

Personally I cannot even fathom the Left and Right political parties of today embracing in a harmonious desire to make/keep America a great country for at least the next 50 years. There is simply too much at stake on both sides to even think about that now. Of course I do agree that it would be a nice thing and best for America. But for me personally the Left is trying hard to build up its Party while the Right is doing its best to keep America as a Capitalist society where we all work for what we achieve and earn. The Left wants everything simply given to people and feel that everyone has a Right to everything. We will not get past those differences lightly.

Hopefully this post won't get to The Attic.
