I remember hearing a story about the painter John Singer Sargent , who was commissioned to paint the portrait of a well - to - do Parisian lady... when he went to collect, her husband 'stiffed' him, and they ended up in court, with the husband claiming that this was a simply outrageous amount of money for a few months work.
The painter answered that this was not the work of a few months, but the accumulated skill of a lifetime.
The judge ordered him to be paid the agreed upon price.
I don't know if this story is true, but is illustrative. I've had people actually tell me (not ask me) to come to their daughter's wedding and tell me that they will gladly pay for the film and processing, and that I can even have a diner if there's one left over. I allowed as how I had to stay at home that weekend and poke myself in the eye with a sharp stick.
oops … it was Whistler, not Sargent … "Nocturne in Black and Gold"
There is a story that a lady was having lunch and spotted Picaso there and asked him to sketch something for her on a napkin. He did and when she asked what she owed him he said some number in the thousands. She said "what, it only took you a few minutes". The artist replied "no madam it took me a life time"! True? but it makes the point
I wonder why folks always ask the photographer to work for free at their charity's fund raising events. Do they get the hall for free? And does the caterer provide the food for free?
One time, someone asked my video partner to do the video for their fund raising event for free, he told them, if I start doing this for free, you will have to do a fund raising for me to support my family!!

It is a problem and always has been. With digital it doesn't cost us photographers anything-right?
"New cameras, lenses, cordless flash units, etc, etc, etc"
When I was a mechanic long ago, my then wife was always telling her friends that I could fix their cars for cost. It's not just photographers.
He should have got the your correct in the ad !! I agree with him though I have only done a couple of weddings and the last one I didnt even get a thankyou.
