Brown Recluse Spider

I found this young Brown Recluse Spider in our basement last night. For some reason they thrive around our home and I find several dozen here each year. They are easily identified by the "Fiddle" pattern on their back. Another identifier is the configuration of their eyes.
I find spiders to be quite fascinating and the Jumpers truly melt my heart when I see them however the Brown Recluse are not welcomed in our home although I do give them their space in the outbuildings for I figure they must be eating something so they must serve some purpose out there.

If you ever see the wound from a bite from one, you may decide to give them less space regardless of what they eat. Rattlesnakes eat mice but I still won't let them call my buildings home!

Completely agree! Neighbor died relatively young after the effects of a Recluse bite - could not be cured / healed. Wasn't the cause of death, but compromised his immune system. I'd be doing some major spraying, outbuildings included.

As someone who has been bitten/stung by a Brown Recluse, eradicate them from your property.

I deal with these things all the time at work. They LOVE human habitat and homes become entrenched. This spider eats dead stuff so the venom has to dissolve stale dead tissue when they feed. Almost impossible to get rid of without tenting and fumigating.

I really love the detail in this shot Gary. He's a hairy little guy. Not an inhabitant of our area of PA or DE so I've never seen one. I understand their bite can be rather nasty. Be careful.

In Tennessee, these guys are everywhere things are in storage. Pick up a cardboard box and you will find several dead and alive. The bites are indeed quite harmful, but I doubt they can be eradicated.

As an Emergency Room Physician, I would suggest you totally eradicate this very toxic spider from in and around your home. I have seen and treated a Brown Recluse Spider bites in the emergency room. They are very toxic to you body.If you have children, you do not want them to be bitten. I'm sure if you "google" Brown Recluse Spider bites you will see the destruction they can cause to your body. Just an FYI
