I am headed to Albuquerque next Wednesday for some sightseeing and photography and then a workshop at Santa Fe Photo Workshops.
I have mapped out a few potential drives. Basically thinking about heading east from Albuquerque and then swinging north to Taos and then south to Santa Fe. I will have four days for this part of the trip.

Do you have suggestions on towns or sights to visit along this rough route?

Thanks for the assistance.

Definitely the tram up to Sandia Peak.
Taos,
Taos Pueblo (photo permit may still be required.),
Santa Fe outdoor market downtown.
The road to Taos/Santa Fe.

Is there a particular reason you want to go east from Albuquerque? There isn't a whole lot to see in that direction (There's a reason the roads are straight on a map, nothing to go around)

On line there were several scenic by-ways listed going east from Albuquerque, which led me to set this general idea. However, I am open to other suggestions.

If I were making that drive I would start with the Turquoise Trail (http://www.turquoisetrail.org/) North to interstate 25. From there I would travel north on I-25 to at least Las Vegas. That section of 25 is a beautiful stretch of highway and an easy drive. At Las Vegas you could take route 518 through the mountains to Taos or continue on I-25 to Springer at Springer take road 21 west until it junctions with Hwy 64. The route from Springer to H64 will take you through some of NM’s ranch lands and two of its most notable, The 2U Bars and the Philmont Scout Ranch. And it is very scenic. From 64 go west following that road and you’ll wind up in Taos. For me anymore I would go the Springer route. I'm a bit long in the tooth and the drive up 518 is a little more effort than I would want to deal with anymore but it sure is pretty

Acoma ("Sky City") is the place I find most amazing in NM. Check to see if there is a feast day because it isn't open to visitors then. Buy the camera pass (only a few $), and ask before taking photos of the local folks. Don't take pictures in the cemetery. One of my favorite places ever, for the experience and for the photos . You can check some of Edward Curtis's historic photos from Acoma. It hasn't changed much in the 120 years since he was there.

I totally agree! If you are not locked into going east and north, take a day and go to Acoma by all means.

Rich1939, thanks for the suggestions on the Turquoise Trail. I will look at the map and build my trip.

Minniev Thanks for the suggestion on the Acoma Pueblo. I took a quick look at the web for information and it looks very interesting. I think I could go to Acoma on day 1 and then head back to the Turquoise Trail.

Jerry, drive safe and enjoy your exploring. For the record, it's hard to make a wrong turn when sight seeing in New Mexico

Enjoy the Santa Fe Workshops. The best part of the week is the ability to mix with other participants and instructors. During MY week I met Sam Abel, Chuck O'Rear (who liked one of my flash inside a tent) photos. Also Lisl Dennis and Greg Gorman were there and provided friendly critiques and great tips. I got more in one week than I did in a College Quarter Course.

And you can't beat the location. The adobe architecture and the of Chile Peppers against the almost cliche BLUE sky will keep you busy. which Course and which instructor??

That is what we did on our second trip. Turquoise Trail is a great route. But nothing else I saw compared with Acoma. It's one of those lesser known treasures.

My only advice is make sure to get the hell out of Albuquerque before sunset.
