On my card there is a slider that must be in the correct position to allow writing. Are you saying that if the broken slider is covered with tape the card will work?

Dennis

Yes. The switch is nothing but a slider that the reader senses the position of.

There is a sensor in the card reader that tells the reader not to write to the card if the if the slot is open, the tape will do job of closing that space to allow writing, it may have to be dark tape as I believe the sensor is led powered, there is no switch in the card body.

No LED, too costly and not necessary as they would also need a light sensor to detect the LED's state, and circuitry to support them both.
The switch is simply a mechanism that opens/closes contact(slides across) on two lands on the circuit board inside.

So any tape will do the trick, simply cover the slider area of the card and you will be able to write or erase the card.

Doubt it.
I don't know if the contacts have to be open or closed for write enable.......
Hiding it from the light most likely won't do anything.
Maybe I'll take my old 4Gb card apart to see what it looks like inside..... Maybe...

Did that already, there is nothing inside the card but the circuit board. The slider is nothing but a piece of plastic. Do you remember the slider on floppy disks, they opened or closed a switch inside the floppy drive.

Of course. I am aware of the slider having found about the card even having a slider last week. But, and sorry if I am persistent, I am asking in probably a poor manner, if the slider is in the off position and is broken off will covering that area with a piece of tape allow the card to then work normally. OR must the slider be pushed up into the on position first? Darn it. I still don't think I am asking to make sense.

Slider on the floppy was mechanical (or optical) to the drive. Could be mechanical (or optical) to the memory slot also!
If tape works, that's the reason then! There is a sensor in the slot that detects the position of the switch (tab) on the card. Interesting.

Yes Dennis, a piece of tape will do the trick.

The question is not about reading the card but writing to or formatting the SD card.
