Is the new 55-300mm Pentax HD PLM lens worth the increased cost over the Pentax 55-300mm HD lens? Also, If i am looking for a good wide angle lens for photos of the stars, please provide any suggestions.

Pentax makes a 14mm f2.8 and a 20-40 f2.8-4 that could help you make astrophotography. I am not a Pentax user but the f2.8 aperture looks like a good aperture to have in a lens for astrophotography. f1.8 is not that super brighter compared to the f2.8 and compensation for the aperture can be done using a higher ISO setting in camera. I have used my 12-24 f4 AF-S Nikon lens for astrophotography without issues.

Good question. I have the older version and would like to hear about the newer 55-300mm lens.

I have the older version but I recollect seeing comments that the newer PLM version is better -perhaps on the Pentax Forum site. Be careful as the PLM may not work on some older cameras. (I have just checked the PF site and you need a 2013 or later camera )

You didn't mention which camera. As far as wides, Rokinon has FFs in 14 f/2.8 (115deg) and a 20 f/1.8 (94deg). Good reviews on B&H. Low priced. Personally, I would go with the 20.

The 14 f/2.8 will give approx 90deg/21mm equiv. on your K-70. $249.

The PLM variant will be a real addition to your kit. It focuses faster and quieter than its predecessor - and, yes, it will work with a K-70.

Incidentally, the question of compatibility results from Pentax's developing the KAF4 mount, which uses an electronic link, instead of a mechanical link, to control the aperture.
