Actually I've had it now for about two weeks. I traded in my Nikon 500mm f4 and released the two Sherpas that I hired to carry it. I can now get closer to birds in a more graceful and less threatening manner - a slow walk. Moving closer with the larger 500mm mounted on a substantial tripod was very awkward and time consuming; now I just slowly get closer, with the camera at the ready.
I only had to wait about 6 months for the new lens and the lens itself is living up to all of its wonderful reviews. I am a happy camper, confident that I made the right choice by switching lenses.
Congratulations! Looking forward to some images.

Hopefully, you are beginning OR already understand/know the huge positive impact that mobility has on wildlife imageing.
.
Congratulations! I'm curious to know who you ordered it from. I ordered one myself about three months ago from B&H. They keep sending me notices that it's still on back order.

Mines on order too and am waiting for it. I get my gear from local camera shop Campus Camera and should have it here this month.

I too have this wonderful glass. Got it at the end of December, I used it this past spring in Florida's wetlands. My review is posted on the B&H site.
I have this lens mounted on my D850 and the 200-500 is mounted on my D500, these two combo's can handle anything that wildlife can throw at me here in Florida.
I do have the D5 battery in my D850, needed the 9 fps.
Good luck to you, you have made a great choice.

Sue, at Campus Camera does all of my show prints. Great service, great knowledgeable staff. One of the last family run photo stores in Ohio. Great place for anyone looking for old time great service.
I’ve been buying my camera gear from Campus Camera for 30+ years ..... I used to live not far from their store.

I bought my new Nikon F3HP from them and have been using their store ever since. Great folks there.
I got the 500 pf when it first came out and first used it on a trip to Bosque del Apache for handheld BIF's of Sandhill cranes. Really a game changer. I now use it either handheld or with a monopod and my humongous carbon fiber Induro tripod can stay at home to collect cobwebs. Everything fits in a backpack.

Hi Howard.
I'm just wondering if you've come across any lighting situations where an f4 would have made the shot possible or even just better?

No. This lens is obviously made for outdoor use so an extra stop is not nearly as critical as it might be for a lens used indoors.

With today's high ISO camera's, f4 is no longer necessary even for indoors.
