My PS 3 gave up the ghost. It will soon be arriving at the town recycling center. I didn't use it to play games. I don't play games (I waste enough time) Used it exclusively to watch blue ray video. I've tried to discern which one might meet my needs but there are SOOO many models. I'm concerned that blue ray will go the way of the Dodo bird in the near future too. But I like having the best picture and sound I can get. Some of these models are from 2015 for godsake! You KNOW they are already outdated. Not looking to spend a ton of $. I don't want to spend 500 bucks for something that will be extinct in a few years. Thanks in advance.
I suspect that all within a price range are of the same competitive quality. You might think of sticking with the same brand as your TV for the sake of compatibility and integration of features.

True. I have a Sony TV. And I have never been a fan of Samsung.

Sony makes a variety of Blu Ray players in the $100 region. And if you don’t have a “smart TV” that supports streaming features (or use an IP streaming adapter of some sort), most players have that feature.
Blu Ray has been replaced by 4K .., so non 4K players are cheap .. go with Sony as you have a Sony tv
For the price and image quality ..go with a Sony BDP-S6700... $100 or less as it is not a 4K ..
I know what I’m talking about .. I have 7 Blu Ray / 4 k players that cost together over 5K ... including 2 of the best OPPO .. 4K SAMSUNG ..., ES Sony 5000 and ES 2000 and the very first BDP-S-1 that cost me $1295 and was the first BluRay player at the beginning of BluRay ...
Okay my experience might be called the most unusual so far on here. When Sony and Pioneer were making their Elite series, they sold for $600 to $1,000 each. But when so many people began to toss their players and DVD and Blu Ray disc into the trash, I bought two Blu Ray Elite players for about $150. Interestingly enough, both players offered "resolution". The player would upgrade a 420DVD disc up to 1080. Does it make a difference? I tread every morning and need the "brain food". So I'm using an HD projector, generating a 9' screen. Yes, the upgrade DVD to 1080 makes a very impressive image. The detail is near what I see with a Blu Ray disc.
As you say, these players may very well disappear, so I purchased a used Pioneer Elite player for $77 two weeks ago. Bought it via Amazon from "alternate sellers". Received, connected, and works perfectly. So I just bought another Elite player with the upgrading feature. This takes me up to four such machines, with the two most recent purchases costing me less than $100. Those Elite machines were designed to last years and years ... and they weigh a ton (figuratively speaking), for they are loaded with electronics. Oh, and by the way, my Blu Ray disc play beautifully on theme.
One factor to consider. What sound system do you have. Not all blu-ray players have 7.1 surround capabilities. If you are ok with 5.1 then there are many cheap ones.
Same here. I took advantage last year to switch my rec room ceiling from a drop ceiling to drywall. Because of that I decided that I could run wires to the rear and could hide them so I upgraded to 7.1 and put in two ceiling speakers to complement the two rear speakers and the sub.
Great fun!
So are you feeding your system with a 7.1 DVD/BluRay player?
7.1 Bluray into a 7.1 channel Pioneer receiver....out to a JBL center, two klipch main and 4 Polk rear speakers.

my Yamaha receiver will handle 7.1 but I wouldn't go any higher than 5.1. I don't have the room to fill it with speakers. My two front speakers are American made Infinitys Excellent speakers.

What is the model number of the Pioneer Elite player you found that does this ?
This is slightly off main topic, but can't resist tossing it out there. A couple months ago my Bluray player started giving me problems, crashing about 3/4 or so thru a movie, or sometimes freezing up and I would have to eject the disc and fast forward to the point where it crapped-up. The set was about 18 months old and I figured, well that one didn't last very long. It did this on almost all the movies we watched.
Off to Best Buy in search of a new one. I lucked on a young sales fellow who said he had the same thing happen to him. He urged me to buy a new cable, keep the sales receipt and try it for awhile but bring it back and return it before the 2 week return period was up if it didn't fix the problem! It cured my problem and saved me big bucks! And he didn't try to push one of those $25 jobs on me either, I paid $12!
