You are making this so very easy. And you've done this? I suppose this would be the way to recover a picture file or a Word file. Is that what you've done?

And does this mean that all the software I have on the machine are on/in TM? I've purchased Microsoft Office, and Affinity Photo, Toast 17, and some others. Does this mean if my computer "went south", and the OS had to be reinstalled....does this mean that I could get all those purchased software back?

Yes I have done this before. It turns out, I am the greatest danger to my own data.

I recommend you create a file for a test, name it TEST. Then let it back up. Then delete it and restore it from time machine.

I believe TM will restore all the applications as well as data. You will probably have to re-activate the licenses.

I am so hoping many others are reading this dialogue chain. You have done such a great job explaining these things, and I hope others will gain from it.

And I will use Word and write a TEST file. My TM will back up every hour, so testing it should be easy.

I hope I can return the favor, and thank so much for your help.

Yes from single files, folders, entire computers. I also have two time machine backups per computer. One to a network drive, one to a locally attached drive.

So are you saying I could connect a second external HD, say 4-GB, have that one perform as a second Time Machine....but have it backup only my current two external 4-GB?

To make this clearer, I currently have a 1TB external back up my iMac via Time Machine. I'm also using two 4TB externals as storage for images one one, Word files on the other. They are not being backed uped. Now, can I purchase another external HD, connect it to my iMac, and have Time Machine ALSO use the new external hard drive....so that it backs up the already two external hard drives? If you say yes, then Amazon just sold another external HD, that's how much confidence I have in you guys.

Yes and no...you cannot configure one TM to backup just the externals, and one to back up just the internals...you have ONE configuration...

Now, why not pick up an 8-10 TB external and let it be your TM disk for your internals and your externals? I use a 4 TB external as a TM disk that holds about 6 - 7 months of backups for my internal and my images stored on an external drive with no issues. I will replace my 4 TB TM soon with an 8-10 TB drive and start over.

Amazon sells an 8 TB WD MyBook, usb 3.0 for 139.00 right now, watch for a deal on the 15-16th of the month.

If you wish to use separate drives for separate backups, go with an app like Chronosync for Mac. You can configure separate backup schemes for different backup disks, for example, I use Chronosync to detect when I connect my monthly Photo backup disk, and it fires off a backup set of just my photographs when it is connected automatically, Chronosync also runs a daily music backup of my digital music files from my music library on one external to a backup copy on another external. These are separate from my Time Machine backups and do not interfere with TM at all. It is a set it and forget it function - once configured, set up and tested it just runs, no hassles. Restores are easy, since the backup is an exact file copy, you can restore from Chronosync or just copy the files back using Finder.
