I tried to find out whether the D5 had some degree of weatherproofing. The consensus was not.

The consensus was incorrect. Being Nikon's top Pro camera, the D5 has extensive weatherproofing. That doesn't mean you can take it swimming, but it does mean you can soot in the rain and the snow, something I have done many times. You must also be reasonable and NOT do such things like change lenses and/or memory cards. To protect my D5-400/2.8E combination in hard rain, I use an Aquatech Sports Shield. Best of luck.

Yes, it's weather not water proofing, although waterproof will be best for at worst a summer downpour. The most recent topic I found for this was 2017, so time to revisit, and for me to rebuy.

I did have a "rain cover" by altura, which is the type with hand sleeves on both sides, and it was rubbish and I threw it out. Now I see there are bags which claim to be waterproof, among them diapac, luniquz and others. They look simpler to use than the sleeves, and many purchasers are claiming they are waterproof down to X meters, so they should sufficient for me. All are on Amazon, one had a negative rating because the lens opening scratched the lens, which is bad.

So if you have weather or waterproofing equipment recommendations, please share. It needs to protect my recently purchased reconditioned Canon 5D, which is awesome and thanks for the recommendations on that.

I use Ruggard Fabric Rain Shields. They come in 3 sizes, and I bought one of each. They come with a storage pouch, are light, and easily packable in a camera backpack or jacket pocket. Go on the B&H site and type in “Ruggard Fabric Rain Shield” and read through the descriptions and reviews. B&H runs a 24 hour special on these a couple of times a year and they sell out well before the 24 hours is up. I got mine during one of these sales. i have been extremely satisfied with mine. My usual outdoor set-up is a Nikon D500 with a Tamron 150-600 G2. Worked like a charm shooting burrowing owls in driving rain!

I have used the Optech rainsleeves in very heavy rain (with wind). While being careful where I aimed the camera, they worked very well. I also have some Peak Design camera covers that work well in milder situations.

Have a look at Op-Tech rain sleeves.....

I agree... The Op-Tech sleeves are inexpensive and work well. I have one or two in each of my camera bags "just in case".

I also have cheap, lightweight, hooded plastic ponchos in my car and in my camera bag, to help keep both me and my gear dry on the rare occasion when it rains in California! I see a lot of rain ponhos on Amazon and elsewhere.... The ones I got were only about $3 each.

The Dicapac waterproof bags are handy and should be submersible up to 15 feet. I have never used mine in a submersed state. However, on a recent trip to Niagara Falls, the Dicapac was very good at keeping the water out during heaving spray and splashing of the falls at various observation decks and boat tours. Canon weatherproofing probably would have been adequate but the 5DS camera and Canon L glass came out completely dry.

I made a variation to the setup. Instead of using the front waterproof cap, I attached the lens sleeve of the Dicapac to a tulip hood, mounted the hood to the camera lens and mounted a glass UV filter on the front of the lens. (The poly-carbonate front lens cover is effective at keeping water out but is easily scratched and less than optimal quality.) Placing a glass UV filter on the lens allowed for quick and trouble-free wiping of the front glass with no worry about scratches. I attached the sleeve to the hood with gaff and vinyl tape. My custom setup is NOT under-water proof but better than a plastic bag ! This setup is also effective with dusty or misty conditions found at many seashore locations.

I have seen folks take the Dicapac setup - with the waterproof front cap attached - under water with no issues but would not trust a a cut-able bag underwater while scuba diving. I have had wet suites sustain cut damage and they tend to be more resistent than the vinyl of the Dicapac. Again, the image quality with the poly-carbonate lens, is at best, a little better than mediocre.

Hope this helps

I never ever think about shooting in the rain but a little while back I’d taken a shoot for a local 5k race and sure enough it was raining. I went by my work place and grabbed a big thick trash bag, punched a small hole in the bottom and stuck the tip of my lens through it and put a few zip ties on it and was assigned a spot to photograph from. Once the runners were close I put the entire trash bag over my head with the camera inside and shot 300-400 pics. I may of looked kinda stupid but it got the job done and my 5D iv was safe and dry. This isn’t a good solution but it worked for a one day deal.

I've used a lot of ewa marine bags, and yes, they are waterproof, Never had any issues, went down 60 feet with a movie camera in an ewa bag and all was fine as usual!

Plastic shopping bag with hole cut in the end. Put a rubber band on the lense to hold in place.

One quick suggestion that has saved me more than once when travelling.

In a lot of hotel bathrooms they include a one use only shower cap - purloin a couple of those and drop them in your bag or a pocket (yes, wife will complain a bit).

Amazing how effective they are when you need some rain cover - not a long term solution, but has kept my gear dry and working when I had nothing else.

I just wrote a detailed post on the subject. The thread is kinda interesting too. Here's a shot of my bad weather protector.

I used the Altera with my 6D MKii and 28-300 L on a tripod while videoing soccer games. Worked great.
Wind blew rain onto the front lens, however that is not the Altera's fault. It was a very windy day.
Why didn't you like yours?
