Anyone who uses MS Outlook either has experienced this or will in the future - It just won't open.
If you Google it, you will find all sorts of repair programs you can download; there are instructions that can be followed, there are all sorts of fixes thrown at you. I found a simple way to fix this. I am using Win10 and I have a feeling this will work with other operating systems. Here goes: get to the Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL all at the same time will do it). Open the TASK MANAGER > scroll down to Microsoft Outlook > hilite it > Click on END TASK > close Task Manager > wait about 20 seconds > open Outlook. This works for me and should work for you. BTW, the reason I recommend waiting is because Outlook closes rather slowly.
Interestingly, if Outlook is open and working fine, and you go to the Task Manager, Outlook probably won't be on the list. When the problem of not opening occurs, it will be on the Task Manager list and End Task fixes the problem. Good Luck. Let me know if you ever use this and it works for you.

This is an usual occurrence with programs that fail to close completely. Your solution is correct and has work for me many times. Bu the way, an easier way to open the Task Manager is to right click on the task bar at the bottom of the screen.
You get the same results if you reboot the computer.
Do you leave your computer on all the time and never reboot it?
Always the first step in any machine running any program in Windows--Shut it down all the way, wait 30 seconds or so and restart it. That operation will fix 95% of Windows problems. After that you can try the repair function on you install disk. As a desperation move you can reinstall it.
Yeah I know the 30 second rule dated back to the early days of hard drives but I still wait.
Good Luck

I cannot remember specifically when the last time was that I had trouble but I know I would have tried rebooting.

Normally I turn off my computer once a week. When Outlook has this problem - rebooting did not help.

no - follow OP and use the task manager FIRST to 'end' the task; no need to reboot, much less shut everything down
Where I work at a newspaper printer we recently purchased/upgraded to a system to help control our ink levels on press. A fairly complicated system but worth the time and effort to bring online. It runs on a windows 10 system. We are constantly having to "end tasks" on this machine as it seems win 10 does not know how to properly shut down programs that are instructed to shut down.
Be grateful - Outlook is horrible. Wish I had that problem!
😁

I had to use Task Manager to solve an issue with Chrome last week. I'm sure others will find your post helpful.
Two other ways to open Task Manager (Win 10):
1. Right click the Win logo (Start)
2. Right click an empty space on the taskbar

I'm from the "Old School" of CTRL/ALT/DEL :-)
The reason I mentioned this solution for Outlook is because it is not one that would readily come to mind. The problem appears to be that Outlook won't open so ending the task may not be thought of.
I have been using Outlook for years without any problems, along with Yahoo and Chrome. I hope by reading this thread I haven't been jinxed.
I'm curious. What do you use Outlook for? I have been in computers and build my own computers and have never ever had to use Outlook.
I used and liked Outlook for years, but when I ported it to a new computer it asked for my password. Since it had been years since installation, I had no clue. Now using gmail, but it can't sort by sender, and I still can't get into my contacts list
