Spot-on Mike.! and a good illustration of what occurs in a focus stacking session. Areas of transparency appear to be quite weird when you first encounter them along with the 'worm trails'. It's almost like the camera has an 'x-ray eye' that it can see through parts of the subject.

In working with numerous focus stacking software programs and shooting many sessions, including a lot of duds, I thought it would be appropriate to expand upon the process of focus stacking so that it may be helpful in selecting a program for purchase as to why some features are desirable over others.

I try to stack for macro on a daily basis and have tried several programs. I find that Photoshop does not work well with large stacks of images, particularly if there are overlapping hairs and bristles. I tried On1 but it only accept 14 images or less in a stack. As I can't recall the last time I had of stack of 30 images or less in macro, it was not useful although I will try it when I next stack a landscape because they typically do not require as many shots. Helicon does a good job but I like Zerene better. As previously remarked, the touch-up brush works particularly well. I also find that there is less color fringing. Both Helicon and Zerene offer free 30 day evaluative periods for trying their software.

I am attaching several images. The first one is at 5x and the second one is at about 2.5x. Both were stacked using a Stackshot automated rail and a Canon 65mpe lens. For shot at 1x or lesser magnifications, I typically use one of my macro lenses and stack by changing the focus on the focus ring of the lens.

When I am stacking in my studio I use either LEDs or the available light from a large glass block window. As some of the processes tend to increase contrast, I find diffuse light tends to work best.

Thanks Mike. I have been stacking since 2005, and each day it excites me that much more.

Now that I'm home and can download your images to view on my computer screen, I can more fully appreciate them. Great stuff. Keep up the good work.

Of those who use stacking software, what are your preferences: Zerene Stacker, Helicon, or other? What are the most useful features? Easiest to use? Stack size limits? I would appreciate hoggers input.

Adding another to the mix. Has anyone had any experience with “Focus Stacker” Software in Apple Apps?
