D850 and Zeiss Makro Planar

Bought a beautiful Zeiss 50mm Makro Planr F2.0 ZF2 manual focus to complete my lens selections & found it to be as sharp and color true as billed. Only problem was auto exposure in A priority with f stop controlled by the camera did not work as it is supposed to, controlled by the camera. I was advised by seller to return/exchange, which I did. Same problem. 2nd time, tried lens on backup D500 where it did what it should have. Zeiss is unaware of problem, so is Nikon, who more or less say just buy Nikon (of course). BTW, I upgraded to the latest firmware; still same. For the $$, not right not to have full functionality. Ideas?

I have not heard of this problem; of course it's totally unacceptable. I assume you have done a full Google search for others who might have encountered the same issue?

ok, thanks. There do seem to be some focus issues out there between Zeiss manual focus lenses and N 850. I did not find an exposure related issue similar to mine in the brief google dive however. For now, my conclusion is that the 850 is the problem, not the Zeiss lens, based on it working on the D500. To note also, the store says they tried the same lens on their 850 and found it worked. Is this warranty issue for the 850?

Is your D850 still under warranty from Nikon? Even if it's not, they ought to fix it for free since it's apparently a defect in your particular camera. Or better yet, if possible exchange the D850 for a new one with the dealer from which you bought it.
Your camera and lens are both top notch, and should function as designed.

Nikon offers no guarantee of compatibility with third party lenses or accessories. Nor do they have any contractual obligations at all to determine compatibility issues with those products.
No camera or lens manufacturer has any contractual obligations in non OEM compatibility issues, never have, never will. That is a risk the consumer assumes when they buy third party products. Caveat Emptor

Zeiss has manual aperture settings on their lenses. You need to set the F stop at the smallest F stop on the lens. It will then work. Common mistake.

Do you mean f2/largest opening or highest number/smallest opening of the lens?

Smallest, f16 or f22, which ever is the smallest.

Love Zeiss ZF lenses on my D810. Never a problem to use. Have you tried setting aperture using the Aperture ring on the lens?

I have a Nikkor 50mm F1:8 auto focus lens pre D designation. I have to set the aperture to F16 before it will function on my D7100. The other Hedge Hoggers here that did the same thing to their cameras are correct.

Thanks. Actually I'm an oldtimer who remembers when you had to do this with all the Nikon lenses when they had the little indexing ferrule so that was the first thing I did...and locked at F16 which btw is denoted in a different color. Stilll no go.
