I just purchased the Canon Pro1000 printer, and so far, I love it. I've received advise that this printer should remain "on" even when not in use. Is that correct?

Yes and if you get brief power outages, be sure that it is connected to a UPS. That way the printer will not want to clean itself after each power blip.
