But PSE is a poor choice when it comes to editing raw files (that's what the OP is after)!

Respectfully, that has changed now that PSE 2019 has been released.

I have been pretty much a JPEG shooter for a long time, and have finally decided to make the jump to RAW. I am wondering if anyone in UHH uses Mac's "Photos" program for editing RAW images, and if so, do you find it adequate? I have Affinity Photo, but find that difficult. It's a pretty heavy program with lots of features that I don't think I'd use to edit photos just for my own use. Same with LR, but it seems easier to use. I'd appreciate any good input regarding "Photos" for RAW editing. Thanks in advance.

I use Photos sometimes when I shoot Raw. It's okay program, the Noise Reduction and Sharpening are pretty weak, everything else seems to be okay.
I can recommend PhotoScape X. It's free program, VERY easy to use and way more powerful than Photos. Another free option is Raw Therapy, but PhotoScape X much easier to use.

Thanks. Will check those out.

I use Photos for editing many of my RAW images and find its features easy to use and adequate, if the image is well exposed and composed. In other words, the Light and Crop tools are denerally all I use in Photos. For images that need more detailed work, LR is much better. One of the reasons I use Photos is simply because when I import images on to my iPad or iPhone it automatically imports into Photos. I typically import and edit onto my iPad. Then store the “keepers” on LR CC. I have not found a work around that would allow me to import directly into LRCC on my iPad Pro.I believe that The soon to be available iPad Pro will allow import of images directly into LR and also will allow imports and downloads with a USB drive. HALLELUJAH! I recently discovered though that Photos does not read all RAW images. I shoot RAW with a Nikon D500 and a Leica Q which Photos reads and edits, but no luck with a Fujifilm x300. While I love Apple products, Photos can definitely use a few improvements for the more serious photography enthusiasts who shoot RAW. LR is a much better developed product than Photos. Maybe that’s why Apple will soon permit direct imports into LR and reserve its Photos for the more casual snapshots. Good luck! There are several good video courses on LR available on the web.

To your question. Without being boorish about what you should do. I did use Mac Photos for a short time. I did not like it. I now have LR and PS. I do like LR very seldom do I venture to PS. When I do it takes longer to finish.

I am not a pro so read no further if you are:

I shoot exclusively in RAW (Canon CR2 and now CR3) and do all my editing in Photos. It's free and does what I want it to do: crop and some color manipulation. I try to get what I want with the camera and then do a minimum of editing. Photos is also reasonable with organization.

I have Affinity for Haze reduction and Retouch, and Noiseless CK for noise reduction. Both accessed from within Photos. I also use PhotoScape (free version) for batch processing and collages.

RAW needs a lot of memory. I have 16GB on iMac and 8GB on MacBook Air. 8 GB isn't enough I've found out, especially with EOS R files (CR3 files 35-40MB in size).

PS Photos has issues with Canon CR3. On the Info window it won't display the ISO value. All other programs I have don't have this issue. Of course Canon and Apple say it's the other guy's problem.

If you own Affinity already, don't spend more money. If you think the day has come to be a RAW shooter, then the day has come too to become a RAW editor. Use u-tube for free training videos and get on with the training tasks and give up on the short-cuts. The only real short-cut is to set your camera back to JPEG.

Amen to that.

I found this book on Amazon; The Apple Photos Book for Photographers. It gives a great explanation of iOS photo's capability.

Oops, I hit send before adding my comments.

I have LR CC on my ipad Pro, but really haven't used it yet. It would be really nice if I could import RAW images directly into LR CC on the iPad Pro, but I can't justify the cost of a new iPad Pro. That would make things a lot more convenient. Perhaps Apple will provide an update to the iOS that will allow that. I can live without the USB port, though. I'm not a pro, or even an advanced amateur, but sometimes I'd like to have more flexibility in editing a photo than a JPEG image will provide for.

I shoot raw only, and have no trouble importing my photos onto my 2 year old ipad pro and as soon as I open LRCC they are there. Apple's iOS dumps them into Photos too, but I eventually delete them from Photos which is a pretty weak performer in its mobile incarnation. I do all my editing in LRCC on the ipad when I'm traveling. I use a work flow that brings them back to my desktop computer when I get home. If you're wanting an ipad only solution. LRCC is a good one. If you want a mixed mobile and desktop solution LRCC is still a pretty good solution. I use LR Classic and Photoshop when I'm home on the desktop but LRCC is a pretty solid performer on either desktop or mobile.

Affinity is a good substitute for Photoshop if you don't have PS, but perhaps you do, depending on which Adobe plan you get LRCC through.

It sounds like you've got all the software you need and what you may need most is study, practice and confidence. You can master this stuff, just do it a piece at a time.

You are correct. I've got LR CC for the iPad Pro, and Affinity on the MacBook Pro, although it's got fairly limited storage space at 128GB. I also have access to LR via my grandson who has included me in his subscription. Yup, I do need to spend some time reading and studying on this.

I have a Canon G16, as well as a Sony A6300. The Nikon P900 only shoots JPEG.
