I'm taking an Alaskan trip later this month and intend to do some whale watching. My D3400 takes excellent pictures AND excellent video. Problem is it can't do it simultaneously. In this once-in-a-lifetime moment, which mode do I use to capture the moment? Thanks
I may be admitting to my ignorance, but I thought good quality
stills could be extracted from high-res video?? If so, isn't that the answer?

You could take a dedicated video camera too.
Something like I have, a small Sony Handycam. Mine has a 60X optical zoom and makes great videos. And they are not all that expensive.

Yes & No... OP camera is a D3400 that takes 1920x1080 HD video so only a 2 Mp Still can be had. On 4K video (3840x2160) cameras one could get an 8 Mp file which is getting into high res.
I use a video camera for video not a dslr.

Good idea. I also have a Sony video cam. Records HD video in multiple resolutions.
on SD cards. Long zoom range, excellent quality, and very inexpensive used on ebay.

Yep, you probably have one like mine. Records on SD cards and has 60X zoom. It's a nice little camera that is easy to use and small enough to put in a coat or jacket pocket.
I have never used any of my DSLRs or mirrorless cameras to shoot videos.

I was planning to take two cameras along, one would be a D3400 and the other was going to be a 60x optical zoom bridge camera, the DSLR for me and the bridge camera for my wife. Think I stay with the DSLR for stills and take my Canon HV20 high definition Mini DV camcorder. The latter is a small point and shoot with 10x optical zoom with auto-focus. Thanks for the suggestions.
