Hi all,

Basically just what the title says.
I would like to check variable ND filters........is there a decent enough one to be considered useful?
Which one?

Thanks,

Juan

No, go with fixed value ND filters. Variable are gimmicks.

My advice is to avoid it. That advice was passed on to me by a B+W optical engineer.

There are too many unpredictable issues that can arise. Trying to skirt those issues results in compromising your camera settings.

We use Variable ND filters without any problems, it is a learned talent as with any of your gear so it is work, our gear is high end not the enthusiast level, I would tell you to get a cheap one put it everything you’ve got and manipulate the heck out of everything, see what you get, try the ultimate daylight to night to daylight rotation, if you can do that you can capture anything.

I have given examples earlier in this thread.
Naysayers have nothing because they are clueless about how to use a variable ND.

Thank you all for your opinions and information.
I usually like to reply to each one, but too many joined in this thread to do it :)

My idea of using a variable one is to reduce the amount of them, and if the affordable ones (around 120) are useful, they are a cheaper solution that having several fixed one.

Sadly I can't try them without purchasing and won't be able to return if I don't have good results. That's why all your opinions are invaluable.

I have lots of information from this thread to go over and see what I decide :)

Yes, in the 1980s when I was the manager of the studio sales department at the old Helix Photo in Chicago.

Let's see 40 years ago.
I bet technology has possibly changed since then.
