Hi all,
I'm heading to Italy at the beginning of August for two weeks (a week at a villa in Tuscany and the rest of the time in Rome) with a group of friends. I've decided to attempt to just carry on, and am thinking of leaving the DSLR behind and possibly getting a point and shoot. I mostly will be shooting the friends, some street photography, and the normal touristy sites, I guess, but people are my main interest. Any suggestions on a good P&S that won't break the bank - say around $300 that'll give me some good results? Would like to use the regular size memory card, Raw would be nice, Wifi would be awesome, and a nice zoom with some nice action capabilities. Is it possible?
Thanks!

I've thought about doing that, but I just have an iPhone 7 and don't think I would be as happy with the results as I would be with something with a few more options...

I couldn’t take my good camera but my iPhone 7 got some great shots in Tokyo

I love my Canon SX710HS. Really good zoom, focuses within 1/2 inch, the size of a pack of cigarettes, light, but no Raw, and no viewfinder.

Do yourself a big favor and forget the camera and buy a Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod kit for 25 dollars at Amazon. It makes a great grip for the phone and works as a tabletop tripod. That with a remote trigger for your phone and you will be set for your trip.
If you must buy a camera I would go with the Lumix ZC-70. It will take 4K video and photos. You can use their 4K Burst Mode to take super sharp photos. I have one and flowers moving in the wind and running critters are no problem now.

Almost forgot

For my European trip, I was given advice to leave the DSLR at home. Best advice I ever took!! I opted for a Sony a6000 and 3 lenses, but actually could have just taken the 18-105/4 lens!

If you'll be in Tuscany middle of August, Siena's Palio is definitely a bucket list item. 4 days of excitement, culminating 16 August with the actual race (twice a day practice races before), 90 seconds of heart stopping excitement, 3 times around the central "square" (in reality, a semi circle).

People shots? Street scenes? Follow any Contrada (district), and snap the genuine emotions, the 2 flag wavers/throwers with drummer and the members following... This is NOT a tourist event, but for the locals, outsiders warmly welcomed.

Don't bother with the free standing area in the center (you pay nothing, you see nothing). Buy tickets for the bleachers (my favorite San Martino turn for the final, have seen a number of Palios from there; watch at least one practice race at the starting point as the start method is unique), expensive, but worth it. Many photo opportunities during the pre-race parade, the calvery charge, and the race (when I was there, it was in the days of film cameras).

Do a bit of studying, and it'll be even more fun.

Thanks so much everyone for the input on cameras and Italy! I actually ordered the Panasonic DC-ZS70 and I'll have about a month to mess around with it before the trip. I'm a little concerned about the feedback on low light so I might order one of the Canons that have been suggested to do some hands-on comparisons. I usually order from B&H but haven't ever had to return anything - their policy is pretty good though, right? If I order another I should be able to return the one I decide against...

B&H are great to work with and you should have no problems with them. The low light and larger sensor can be game breakers considering a do-it-all in one package. Good Luck.

Please let us how you like your new Panasonic ZS70 and if you order a Canon which you like the best. I am on the fence in trying to decide which point and shoot camera to order.

Personally, 'though all my previous cameras were Canon, I purchased a Panasonic because I needed a viewfinder.
