Does size really matter?

Ones hand size does matter when holding a camera body for extended times on a shoot. A quick grab shot from a P&S camera or from ones cell phone is fine, but during extended times when holding a camera, the camera must feel right. For those with large claws (me included), the trend towards smaller mirrorless bodies is simply awkward. I have full sized DSLR's (FF and APC) and am most comfortable with the extra battery grips for my large claws, but then there's that weight. My first grasp of a Sony A7rIII was awkward in that I liked the weight but where does my little pinky go? Then there is the nice Sony small hand grip that is just for my little pinky to land without the mass of a battery holder. Nice execution for Sony for us with large claws!

I wonder if there are many left handed photographers that struggle with the camera controls being set up for right hand operation. I never hear anyone mention or complain about it. Not that it would matter.

Also some people who are left eye shooters complain about that interfering with some controls. I have always been a left eye shooter but have never had any problems because of it...

Interesting is the fact that, as mirrorless bodies shrink in size, complaints increase on ergonomics.

I have the Fuji x100F as a walk around camera, and love that it is so convenient and portable. One basic shortcoming is no thumb rest... its odd how the manufactures can't figure that out. Most mirrorless need extra's like hand grips, or other add-on's to be more usable it seems.

With two Mk 4's that serve me well, a Canon 1DX mkii purchase was a tough one, considering what is in print concerning the specs of the 5D vs 1DX and the size. None the less, I love the bulkiness... and my Lord is it accurate and fast. One of the best purchases I have ever made. I really had to toss the idea of going smaller on this one.

Yes, small can be a good thing, but for me, when I need to mount serious glass or be more accurate... Bigger seems a better choice, and the size of the 1DX mkii actually has an ergonomic advantage after a week of use, when comparing bodies.

I wonder when a perfect ergonomic size, and basic hand comfort will be finally figured out in the designs of future bodies...

Try the Lensmate Thumb Rest https://lensmateonline.com/products/fujifilm-x100f-thumbrest-black-by-lensmate?variant=35083499916 for your X100F, it changes everything.

Cheers!

I have had the X100F since December and it feels fine in my average hands (maybe small but I do buy large gloves rather than medium). My thumb goes to a comfortable position naturally. I have not tried it with the thumb rest, but I think it would be awkward for me.

The G9 is one of the most ergonomically satisfying cameras made.

Lumix has done a marvelous job, since the GH3 forward, of engineering their cameras for real photographers. The controls are mostly where you would expect them, the grips are solid, and the menus are easy to navigate and understand (Every selection has scrolling context-sensitive help). They've carried this to the full frame S1/S1R/S1H, too. Of course, the full frame system is heavy, since full frame lenses take lots of heavy glass.

I've found my GH4 to be the best-handling camera I've owned. Previously, that honor belonged to a Nikon F3HP.

sort of reinforces the idea that 'try before you buy' is still a good idea. If the camera isn't comfortable, whether 'naked' or with attachments, cases or whatever, you probably won't get optimal shots.

Yes, or buy where they have a good return or exchange policy...
The problem is that if one is fortunate enough to have a good camera store they still may not stock what you are looking to handle or try out. I have run into that in Charlotte, NC.

have three cameras in regular use now, and although I love it and will keep it as long as it works, my D3 is, well, a handful. Maybe more than a handful. My Panasonic GX7 is perfect for my tiny velociraptor hands, and the body of my OMD5ii fits perfectly in my hands and the menus not at all in my brain.

Last good camera store in Charlotte was Camera World... no one has come close to their professionalism or inventory.

I go to Biggs because I am in that area frequently. They just don’t have a lot that I am interested in, but try to buy some stuff there. Never heard of Camera World, maybe it was gone before I got back into photography more, moved here in 2005. Used to be some Ritz camera shops around, but I didn’t really care for them.

There is a big camera store here in Dallas, TX. They got just about anything I want to take a look at.

I planned on visiting B&H sometimes this year. Herschel said he would show me around the store. I won't be buying anything though.
