I tried this classic still life but didn't see how shallow the depth of field was in the viewfinder. Should have, but didn't. Yes, I knew I was going for shallow dof because I wanted the background to be blurred, so it's not like I'm surprised. So, my question is if the blur on the decanter is ok because of the style of the scene? My gut tells me no, but I'm not sure.

If I do need the decanter to be sharp, is the scene otherwise worth a reshoot? I know that may not be the only issue - the mixed light temperatures, the close crop on top. I feel like I'm talking myself into liking anything about it, but I also feel like it's close.

I would say reboot it. The only thing that looks sharp to me is the grapes hanging out of the basket

It's your art your creation if you don't like it and it's not good enough for you you know what to do do the re shoot

OK - that makes sense.

In general, does the scene have the potential to be a pleasing image? I know for sure I've got to get more room at the top, but I'm not sure about the mixed lighting. I guess I'm not objective.

I think it's a rather awkward composition.

OK - good feedback. This is the first time I've really tried this style. What would improve the composition?

Perhaps a bit more headspace and rotate your position to the left to flatten out the subject or even bring the decanter to the front and let the fruit trail off into blur.

Rotate the decanter so the spout points "into" the picture.

I agree with all the above comments. The problem with your picture is that very little of it is in focus and, further, the wrong items are in focus. I have no problem with the flask being out of focus. In fact I would accentuate it but be sure that the items of interest (the grapes) are in sharp focus. Otherwise I like the composition and the tonalities.

The focus is definitely too soft throughout. I find the lighting to be somewhat dim, also. I think the foreground should be more in focus and better lit to accentuate the objects closer to the camera. I do like the overall composition and theme. This image has great potential in my opinion.

Reshoot. It would be pretty easy to subsequently mask and blur the background in Photoshop.

I agree. I would shoot around f6 and if you need to you can blur a little more in post.

For me, once you pull the wine stopper out, I want to see a glass of wine! LOL The DoF issues is why I always shoot one wide open, in the middle and closed up. Later it's fun to pick the best shot. But really, I miss the wine glass. Cheers
