Yep, my vote also. Regardless of the make or manufacturer, I would definitely find a model with 16GB memory. While 8 will run, it’s going to be very limited for post processing and/or multiple applications, AND there may not be the ability to upgrade the memory in a laptop later. Whether an I5 is adequate depends on which I5 it is - there are fast ones that are faster than a low end I7, but slow ones that I would find marginal for PP. in general, I would prefer an I7 based machine such as the one above (which is a very good deal), but again, depends on the particular model I5. Regarding AMD, they are coming back strongly with their new processors, which spec-for-spec, are a match for Intel, but again, it depends on the specific AMD CPU. I would find out the specific model CPU whichever way you go, especially with an AMD, as some of their recent CPUs have been realatively power hungry, which translates into more heat and less battery life with a laptop. By all means, get a seperate graphics adapter (either NVIDIA or AMD) with at least 2-4GB VRAM rather than on-board graphics.

One thing I want to mention is that many laptops come with processors that only have 2 cores, even if the processor is an i7 or whatever. I have an HP with a 2 core i7. I think that this is to conserve battery power and possibly reduce heat dissipation. If it matters to you, then you should check.

Although I’ve never personally seen a 2 Core I7, there are a dozen models of I7s, so I believe you, and I completely agree that knowing the exact model of CPU is critical. I have one machine with a top end I5 and plenty of memory and good graphics that is more than adequate for any task. It is also socketed for an I7, but I haven’t found the need.

AMD’s new processors are very interesting, and I’m glad to see AMD come roaring back and be more than competitive with Intel. $ for $, you can buy more cores with AMD, but there’s more to CPU performance than the number of cores. I’ve built a number of AMD based machines in the past and found them to be rock solid, but haven’t built one recently. Interestingly, the world’s fastest Exoscale supercomputer, being assembled at Oak Ridge by Cray, is an AMD based machine. The second fastest, being built at Argonne National Labs is Intel.

Whenever I need a new laptop for photo processing (and word processing) I go to my local computer store and tell them my needs. NOTE: I go to my LOCAL store, not a big box store. My local store (Kaplan Computers, Manchester, CT USA) pays straight salary and no commissions. The sales people are knowledgeable; they ask pertinent questions; they will show my multiple laptops that will meet my needs and I will then make my choice. My local store also services what they sell.

I suggest you do the same.

My HP laptop, purchased just last year, has a dual core i7 processor. I had no idea until I looked into the service manual under my model, though the device manager would have been a clue. It seems adequate for photo processing, but I've not really tested it with anything else.

Yep, you’re right. I didn’t realize there were 2 core I7s, but my list shows a number of 2 cores between 2012 and 2013.

From a neighbor that purchased a camera from Costco - the added one year warranty applied only to their online purchases. Not sure if that applies to computers as well. Worth asking about if Costco is in the mix.

Ahhh - - the inevitable crapple creep.
Of course NONE of your current software or hardware will work with crapple

If you like brain-dead simple, and everything works the same - at a 150-200% price increase
Crapple is your huckleberry.
IF you don't mind an occasional puzzle to figure out, but like maximum flexibility in an open box computer
Stick with microsnot.

About six months ago I was at Best Buy. I was about to buy a Lenovo Legion 15" with Nvidea Georfdorce GTX graphics card, 16 gb of ram and a 1 TB HDD. It listed for about $1000 was on sale for 850. As the salesperson was on the ladder getting it down I saw one in the clearance bin. Same exact computer, but had been returned but was only opened not used. They wanted around $800 and I asked for an additional 10% off and got it. I got it for around $720 and have enjoyed it muchly. However, as has been written before, Some of the Win 10 updates have messed with my programs including the Office 365 suite and Lightroom and Photoshop.

Good deal for me.

Thanks. I'm heading there today to check out a few. That is the graphics card I've been thinking too. Also very seriously considering Dell.
