Minolta made about half a dozen different versions of this lens.
The first(I think) one, known as the “big beer can”” seems to have a decent reputation. The rest, mostly plastic, not so much from what I’ve read. I have a plastic 75-300mm f 4.5- 5.6 that I’m not all that impressed with. I do have 10-15 other Minolta lenses that I do really like, mostly primes.
See if this helps: http://allphotolenses.com/lenses/brands/c_17/p_7.html and also look into dyxxum.com and Kurt Munger for further info.
Look before you leap though, old Minolta lenses can usually be bought for a song and a dance, and $90.00 for most of the 75-300mm sounds kinda high.
Good luck, there are some great old Minolta lenses out there.

Ms Stokes is a professional bird book person. Check out what she as a professional suggests for bird photography. Your question is about a particular lens, but in reality, your question is "how do I photograph birds."

The two older/oldest 75-300's are the better choice - no matter the price ! Maximize your IQ and use your Clear Image Zoom on the Sony to gain reach.

Get the D model, It was the last model and had the digital coatings. with 7 pin connection.
Most of the cheap models are not that great, and are the older models.
New D model was a precursor to the 70-300 but with out SSM.
All the zoom lenses will loose some IQ at the longest range.
You can buy a like new 70-300 A mount with SSM and really good IQ for $400.00
not as good as the 70-400 but lighter and 1/3 to 1/4 the price

Go to Dyxum to see the reviews of the various 75-300's - there are 4. Getting the BEST IQ one will help the CIZ to do it's best outcome. I think all the 75-300's now are under $100. The first two versions get the best reviews.
