I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A friend has several rolls of undeveloped film he would like processed and printed, not digitized. He wants negatives back. I have no idea where to tell him to go, so I thought I’d ask.

We have a local photo store that does it, I bet you do too if you are near a city. Otherwise there are mail order places. The darkroom for example or just google develop roll film. I'm thinking most places will process the film, scan to digital and print from there, giving you the negatives back, rather than using an enlarger. That's how my local place does it. He wouldn't know the difference.

Mail order Dwaynes https://www.dwaynesphoto.com/ has done a good job for me. You get negatives and scans if you choose - mail and / or online or combo.

On quick note, look on the 35mm cassette and see if it is marked C-41 process, if so this is a 'B&W' film that runs through color processing lines. You get back film and if you like color prints that can be 'neutral' or a color bias for tones like sepia. C-41 color film processing is greatly available out there. Also, most of the people/company that do color print film processing have arrangements to send out B&W film to labs to process regular B&W films.

I have had good experiences with both Dwaynes Photo and The Darkroom. Both develop film, and make prints, and return the negatives. Also they will scan and you can go on-line to share if you want. Best of both worlds.

I have several rolls of color film that should be used up but I haven't shot film in a number of years. I have no idea what the going rate is for processing and printing. Can someone give me an idea of what to expect?

I would try and Google it in Chicago as they would certainly have someone who still offers that service or Adoram in New York who I believe also offer it.

Good Luck and le us know what you discover.

There may be a processing lab right in your area, which could save your friend both waiting time and shipping costs. Check your Yellow Pages.

Advise him to develop film himself.
It is easy and better that any lab today can do.
He just neds a developer, stop bath, fixer and lots of water.
