Program authorization servers can recognize the hardware they are installed on. A program, like Windows 7-8-9-10, is registered by Microsoft, to the specific computer.
This is how publishers can limit their app to only one computer.

Several years ago I purchased LR5 on Ebay for $39.00 (download) the seller sent me a keycode and everything worked out just fine. I used it for several years. Then my old Gateway hard drive bit the dust. After about 8 years of problem free use I had to buy a new desktop. I went to Adobe and tried to download LR5 again on the new computer and the key code was listed as INVALID! I was lucky enough to have backed up everything up on a external HD. After some lucky guessing and finesse, I was able to continue using the copy of LR5 even today. I did severely panic at first, but alls well now.

Ok, let’s all line up at the back of a truck and scoop all our electronics, cameras, tripods that were just ripped out of the back of Best Buy last night. Imagine the savings! Then imagine how outraged we can be when we get raided and the goods confiscated. Where’s the privacy. Just imagine!

Doesn't really apply in this situation. Corel can't do anything.

Call it for what it is: Pirated software. Using it is no more honorable than buying stolen products off of the “back of a truck”. There are all sorts of rationalizations to supposedly justify the process (saving lots of money is one of them) but none of them change the legal implications should the legal owner opt to prosecute.

There was a discussion a while back about cheap programs available on ebay. You pay a few dollars, and you can download a program and receive a S/N to get it working. Just out of curiosity, I tried it with Paintshop Pro. For $2.00, I downloaded the program and got a number. I installed it, and it seems to work, but I never did anything with it. Now, I am getting a pop-up from Corel telling me that it has detected an invalid copy of PSP. In other words, Corel has searched my 4TB drive so thoroughly that it found this apparently illegal the program. So much for privacy.

You see something like this, you can just about guarantee that is illegal pirated software, and will probably add some malware, rootkit, keylogger, or a virus to your machine. BEWARE!!!

I have bought software from eBay and had varied success. Sometimes you get an instalation disc with S/N, sometimes you get a copy. You could ask the seller before you buy, but even an original instalation disc may be used.

Well, I did the same for my wife's laptop by ordering Windows 7. The operating system worked, but she received the same "unauthorized version" warning when she first turns the computer on. System works fine...just the annoying reminder. Somehow Microsoft knows the original download was on a different computer and/or location, and is now having a 'tissy fit' that it has a new user. The total cost to me was $1.85 from United Kingdom.

First off it does not search your hard drive and invades your privacy. It goes to look for updates and checks that you have a valid license.

Corel is good software offers 30 day trials and runs specials as low as 25 bucks at times. Later on you comment about you only ran it once. However in the OP you imply it is still on your machine.

I find it funny how you state about so much for privacy after you got caught with your hands in the cookie jar so to speak.

Software is a necessary evil in photography. Many get GAS with software also upgrading thinking it will make their images better. The shell out hundreds a year yet their photography remains unchanged. Only upgrade with a bargain price or a must have feature to better your workflow.

That said people support your favorite software or they won't be around long if people don't.

How would you feel if someone suddenly published several of your photos online without your permission and without any financial compensation. Sometimes we need to see the issue from the other side before we understand that the issue of piracy could just as easily impact us.

More like the program went to Corel for some hand-shaking and Corel found that the software was not registered (or registered a thousand times).

Not like Corel has been looking at your drive.

I agree. The explanation was not credible.

I have bought many cheap applications on ebay with no problem, including PSP 5.0 and 9.0. I think the solution is to buy the installation CD with the keycode. Good ebay sellers offer a return policy, and ebay has a buyer protection plan if the seller doesn't refund when you don't get what you paid for.
