Here's the thing...
This is a consumer level lens. Unlike the so called holy trinity lenses it's not aimed at those on the top of the foto food chain.
I have used the 28-300 on my 610 for the past few years as a walk around. My observation is that it's weak at the extreme ends but quite good in its mid ranges (where most of what I do happens) Its not a replacement for the trinity but put together they cost $6000+. I do have the 70-200 and love it but it has its limitations.
Walk around is just that. See it shoot it, move on.
One thing. If you end up with one use the 28mm macro switch to lock the lens in place. It has a tendency to creep.
I bet you all have your cameras set as from the factory ..sharp +3 which always gives a soft picture with any lens ..move it to +9 . Then stick it on a 24 mp FX with a low pass filter and you are doomed. Try it on a D810 or D850 before you say its soft. Did you do the fine focus adjust ..mine are +15

Funny, mine has an anti-creep lock.

Actually I haven't done that, but I will now
Thanks
Well that's one person who will now get the best from his Nikon .

Thinking a versatile walk around
Good reviews
Little slow and wide range so can’t be as sharp as some
Any input pro. Con
That lens is on my D810 on all my vacation trips.
I use this lens as a walk around lens attached to a D4s. I find it to be quite sharp at F6.3-7.1 (seems to be the sweet spot for this lens).... two annoying things still don't negate my good opinion of the lens. They are:
1) All the versions I have owned of this lens will hang up when used on single frame AF - Shutter will not fire. I must always use it on continuous AF - then no problems.
2) The front rubber focus rubber ring will eventually expand and lose the glue attachment to the lens surface underneath - making for an unsightly broken look... they last 2 years at most before you have to obtain a brand new rubber ring.... Neither problem affects the image results!
I've had neither of these problems with mine.
