Here's a less expensive option from Polaroid: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1025128-REG/

Of course that's just one person's opinion. Others would say that it's what makes good street photography (and I'd agree) Getting inside, close up and into the action is much more visually appealing to me. Most of what folks call street photography these days bores me to tears...might as well stay home and shoot them with a 20000mm lens.

All you need is a 24 or 35mm lens and a good healthy pair.

Paid $38.99 all costs included. I'm a proud amateur, but dubious on how bright. Puzzled that people would recognize this. So few people walking around with non-phone cameras these days, let alone doo-dads.

The mirror is tricky. It has to be a surface coated mirror. Most mirrors are on the back of the glass so there is a second ghost from the front surface. They are easy to scratch.

I recall between 20 and 40 years ago ads for a right-angle whatsis that attached like a lens, and supposedly let you point your camera north while taking a picture of east. Did this gizmo work? Is it still around. Thanks for responses.

Spiratone, on West 27th and later on West 31st St in Manhattan, and Northern Blvd in Flushing, Queens NYC, used to sell them, along with a bunch of other gadgets, T mount lenses and darkroom equipment.

I have one, as I often had to shoot candids for yearbooks years ago.. Just last week I was contemplating getting it out of storage, as it seems to have become a wicked thing to do to take candids of strangers anymore...

Unless you are taking pictures for profit, the 1st Ammendment says the picture taking 'in public' doesn't need one's approval. You can take pictures government buildings, inside government lobbies, even taking pictures of government employees. You are in 'public.' If they, meaning the people you taking pictures of, object, you can tell them 'your privacy is in 'your' home, not out in plain view.

Why be sneaky and surreptitious about it? Use a wide to medium lens and get in close. If shyness is an issue, work on that too.

Why would it be rude to talk about what people shoot. I used to shoot families in Central Park
in the 60's and they didnt mind. The mindset was different then. Girls in bikinis is not an insult.
We live near the beach now and with a few friends one said take a pic of that attractive girl
in her bathing suit. I told him I don't do that ever.
Shooting people in cities might be a big invasion of privacy. Such as folks down on their lives.
Homeless people I worked in Phildelphia with famous homeless group for a long time.
Their is a right and wrong and how do you decide what is OK to shoot????
I have photos that I would like to exhibit someday soon. They are private moments
people have and would not use a lot of the images.

I bought one from Spiratone company in New York - years ago. They had two models one square shape and the later, improved model was round, more looking like a lens.
I bet, somebody still makes it.
I hope, this could be a useful lead?
Search the Internet.

Back in the day, Spiratone (now defunct) sold these in their multi-page ads in Pop Photo and Modern Photo.
