Have you used this lens to make that statement?

Their is a market for super zoomed for pro's that doe sports etc etc. And they are really expensive.
If you need the lens for your work then consider it. Canon appears to own this market.
You always see the white zooms at events. This kind of cash doesn't make sense to me
unless a pro needs it for work. Or you have a lot of cash and don't care.

Well let’s see... sports pros would probably prefer faster zooms or primes.

Is it fast focusing to keep up with the body FPS.

Is it handhold-able and weather-sealed well enough...

Those are a few questions that would come to mind...

Faster than 600 F4 prime?......who makes that? And I highly doubt you would hand-hold a 600 f4.
I have the Sony fe400 2.8 coupled to an a7iii and autofocus with both the Sony 1.4x and 2x converters is very fast and accurate, and it keeps up with 10 FPS. Optics are superb. Construction is designed for professional use and competitive with Canon and Nikon’s new lenses. I’m sure the 600 f4 will function the same.

No I shoot Canon not Sony. I am asking the question based on what I see Pros shooting and their requirements not any interaction with the Sony lenses.

If you reread my original post on this subject my question is in regard to the 200-600 ZOOM. A $13,000 600 f/4 should be Pro worthy in anyone’s book.

Well Sony has plenty of caveats about compatibility with their teleconverters on different camera bodies, so the true answer is "it depends."

My guess is the independents will stick with a zoom, and leave the fast prime product (and astronomical price) to Sony. Sigma and Tamron should be able to undercut the zoom's $2,000 estimated price, just as they do with their current DSLR super zooms.

But it's good to see Sony seriously competing for the pro market with their mirrorless offerings.

Don't the independents already have a 150-600?

The cost of the Sony 600mm f4 is the same as the cost of the Nikon and Canon 600mm f4s. Sports Pros making their living with their gear will buy this.

I for one have already pre-ordered the 200-600mm lens. I also traded back in my Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 lens. I will get better autofocus and fps with native glass on my A9. Cheers. And look out, Sony is set to release a new A9II with even faster fps than the current A9s 20fps.

I would expect to see both these lenses being used by the Sony shooters at the Olympics in 2020.

And people will think they are Canon because of the color...😳

Well, I have seen quite a few bird shooters hand-holding Canon and Nikon 600mm F4s.

You are on target with your experience with your gear. The notion that that "AF" has to be fast to "keep up" with 10 FPS is a little misguided. It's a combination of the camera body tracking correctly AND transmitting focus adjustments to the lens. Ultrasonic motors are known for fast response and enough torque to move stuff quickly. On another note, I have been blown away by the Sony RX10M4 "keeping up" with 24 fps, even at 22omm (600mm FoV). Besides, the Canon and Nikon counterparts have little problem with "keeping up" - with 10 fps and higher. Even my Sigma Sport 150-600 has no problem "keeping up" with a D500 at 10 FPS. Just sayin'

We all tend to think our favorite lens is the best. I'm no different so I'll jump in with my 2 cents. I happen to own a lot of good lenses. If forced to pick a favorite it's gotta be my Minolta fast focus 600mm f/4!

Minolta made two versions of this lens, the fast focus and the not so fast focus. I have read complaints by someone who had the slower version that it was too slow to focus. Maybe my expectations are more modest but I'm happy with my faster focusing lens ability to focus when placed on the Sony A99II. One must understand the limitations and work within them. The Sony 1.4X TC and 2X TC will work with that lens but only when you can turn the f-stop up to f/8 or higher. The lens becomes manual focus only when you use the 2X TC.

This is enough talk. I need to post some photos:

The first photo was taken without using a TC but heavily cropped.
The second photo was taken using 2X TC and a lot of flashes so I could crank up the f-stop to around f/22. No cropping was used in the second photo.

As in ALL cases, rate of focus is very somewhat dependent on the body in use. Older bodies especially are slower to focus......

Not in native e-mount configuration.
