Camera or iPhone.

I would tell them not to worry about it.
i just printed up some pictures my daughter sent me, they were of the grandkids. I printed 4x6's. They cane out quite good, actually very good. As these were not staged shots where one might think about stuff in the background, garbage can, another person, car, etc. so i did my usual, cropped in. it didn't take much zooming in to ruin the picture, making it fairly useless as a print. i took my own pictures, could easily zoom in 6x, the resultant picture was clear, perfectly usable. so yes you can get great pictures from a cell phone, not saying you wont, and are perfectly ok for what most people might print for casual shots, ie a 4x5. One advantage of a cell phone is depth of field with the 3mm lens of cell phone. most everything is in focus, but forget bokeh. but photography is what the user wants. the vast majority people are perfectly fine with a cellphone shot. they are very unlikely to do any post processing.

"Because I'm a photographer, stupid!"
I don't like the results I get with a phone. Sure, I get something, but after using SLRs most of my life, I expect more than I can get from a phone.

If all I wanted was pictures, an iphone would be sufficient. I tend to want to make photographs. For that, a camera is required.

Sounds good if you don't thinkĀ about it. But given the definitions of "picture" and "photograph" it doesn't
make sense. A picture can be a photograph, or it could be a painting or a drawing. Smart phone cameras do take photographs, and a good photographer can make better photographs with a phone than a novice can with the best camera.
The best camera is the one on you! Get the shoot!

You have a bicycle. So, why did you drive your car here?

No, I don't have a Bicycle (wish I could!) and I take a car service to work due to a major car accident.

Hey Mate, can I borrow your camera for a min; I gotta make a quick call ?

That's a good question. A good percentage of trips most people use a car to do are short enough to do on a bicycle. I'm a 69 year old lifelong cyclist, and I still ride to work. I like getting my exercise and my transportation done at the same time. I know people my age who still do centuries (hundred mile rides).

I don't understand the vitriol and hypocrisy toward phone cameras. The latest crop of cell phone are as good or better than most cameras of 15 years ago. If you were into photography at that time most likely you boasted about how much better they were than film.
Old farts have a difficult time with change, I guess. Cell phones can't do everything...yet.
