battery level

Aloha, the owners' book for my Canon T5 shows hash marks about half way down the picture of a battery meaning the level is low. After the last 5-6 charges it only shows halfway on the camera! Thinking old battery, I bought a new one. This new one shows the same level of charge on the camera. Do you think that a new battery will need several cycles of charging to show full or do I have a problem?
Thanks folks Ed

You have a problem. Batteries do not require any number of charges before they can fully charge.

What does the manual say about the battery indicator?
Maybe it displays differently than the most commonly used method?

How many shots are you actually get it from a charge?

Try doing a full factory reset of the camera. See if that fixes the level meter.

Thanks guys, I will try the reset. I don't know how many shots I get from a charge. I have never depleted one. I always shoot RAW +Jpeg but rarely use the flash.

Thought they would not have deviated from the norm.

Possibly a faulty charger that terminates the charge before completely charged? Do you have access to an accurate way (DVM) to measure the battery voltage directly? That will answer the question immediately. Anything else is a guess.

Except measuring voltage of the charger with no load on it could give a significantly higher reading than if there was a load (like a battery in it).

OP: do you have access anywhere to another charger.....OEM is Canon LC-E10? It is used on a bunch of cameras.

Yep, just to clarify, I’m suggesting measuring the battery voltage when not on the charger (which will tell you if it is really fully charged or not). Measuring the charger output voltage under no load isn’t very useful, but you could also measure the charging voltage over time with the battery being charged (assuming you can get access to the terminals). Alternately, trying a new battery on a different charger and then comparing to the camera readout will indicate if the camera is telling the truth. So you need either a DVM or an alternate charger to diagnose the issue.

You could have a bad new battery. A bad charger. Or the battery indicator in your camera goes bad.
My guess would go to the charger.

went hrough battery issue, only got 100 or so shots. bought OW+EM batteries, still only got a 100 shots.i happened to notice it didn't take too long for the lights on the charger to say the battery was charged. I decided to buy a new OEM charger. Problem solved. batteries now charge and i get over 500 shots. I charged all my batteries again, and the seem yo be working fine.

Hea guys, I measured the voltage on the battery. 8.5 on three of the poles. Had no reading on the other.
tks Ed
