In case anyone is searching for more info, the poster meant to write Oxbow Bend.

Yep, I sure did. Thanks for the correction and sorry for the mistake.

This is one time to protect your lens with clear glass. Lots of blowing steam in the geyser basin.

When my wife and I live in Montana we often would take visitors to Yellowstone Park. One stop we always included in a tour of the area was the North Entrance near Gardner, MT. The elk are almost always there and ready to pose for a picture (even from a car if you have "mobile" concerns. Take care & ...

My wife and I will be going to Yellowstone in September. We are both very senior citizens. I have limited mobility. We will be in a large SUV. I will have a Nikon D7100 and a D500 with me along with an assortment a lenses ranging from a 50mm prime to a 150mmx600mm zoom, a tripod, a monopod and a sand bag. We will staying in Wapita for four nights. I can walk for about a half mile before my knees give out. I need suggestions for good photo ops given all these conditions. Many thanks for your good suggestions.
My wife and I will be going to Yellowstone in Sept... (show quote)

Can you walk a 1/2 mile carrying all that equipment?

My only suggestion is to ask someone who just came back from a trail to one of the geysers just how far and difficult the trail is. We did that and found a few too long and strenuous for us to walk. Most geysers were fairly close.

Also, there is a lot of scenery that you can enjoy/photograph from within your car or at pull-offs where you can stop and walk short distances.

Enjoy!

If you like wildlife photos, I assume you do with a 600mm, get to the Hayden Valley area early, stake out a spot along the road with your SUV and wait for the opportunities to come to you. My wife's mobility is more impaired than yours and we had a great time seeing the sights there. Don't let that hinder you.

There are several side roads that make you feel off the beaten path, for example Blacktail Plateau Drive, Firehole Lake Drive, the drive around mammoth hot springs terrace, the one way from Albright to the north entrance, and more.

September is still ok as far as closures. They are minimal. Not so in October, but September has been decent in the past.
A Few Sites:
Lamar Valley Wildlife viewing
Old Faithful
Old Faithful basin board walk
Painters hot pots
The view from the Lake Lodge
Grand Canyon from Painters Point
Any pullout in front of the Tetons
Mary Lake (the boat ride is usually closed in Sept)
Grand Teton/ Jackson Lake Lodges/Colter Bay
The water falls along the Yellowstone roads (fire hole, Tower Falls, etc)
The Elk by Mammoth/Gardner
Bearclaw pass just out of north east exit

I would change that to Lamar Valley not Hayden.

My wife and I took a trip out west last June. We are roughly in the same shape you are and the high altitude left me short of breath. That being said I bought the self guided tour through GyPSy guided tours. You can get it at the play store and it downloads to your smartphone. It is NOT internet dependent so you don't have to use up your data. I played it through my car's bluetooth radio speakers. You get not only the guided tour but wonderful commentary about the areas you travel through. As you approach a point of interest a chime sounds and the commentary begins. Should you decide to park and go through the area the commentary stops and resumes when you are moving again. I also saw several people plugged into their phones with ear buds as they toured the various points of interest. The guided tours will take several days if you spend time at each location. It was one of the best investments we made on our trip and I highly recommend it. As a bonus, after Yellowstone the tour continues onto Grand Teton Park which could easily take another day (or more). What's nice is that you can travel at your own pace and if an area is too difficult (as many were for me), you can just bypass it. If you are traveling North to South as we did be sure to stop at Jackson Hole, very touristy but you should not miss it. On the way from Teton to Jackson Hole a stop at the Red Ass Winery will be rewarding, (and expensive if you buy wine).

August is the busiest and most crowded month of the year. Suggest you pack a helmet and lots of antacids.

Sorry for multiple replies. I will be driving a very capable 4wd vehicle and have been advised by rangers as to out of the way places not accessible by car. I, too, am unable to hike challenging trails. Not happy now with the $2k non-refundable deposit for lodging in August. Please advise further, hoggers!
