I'm considering buying a Canon 100-400mm f 4.5-5.6 L USM EF lens. There are lenses at attractive prices available on EBAY. There is an obvious risk here. Even if the seller is completely honest they could send you a lens that's one click away from failure and be completely unaware of its condition. Some sellers don't accept returns and you're stuck. On the other hand, many sellers of photographic equipment (especially lenses) have 100% positive ratings. This leads me to think that these seller are accurately describing their items. My question is has anyone played lens roulette on EBAY. If so, what kind of experience did you have, what is your opinion of the lenses available and what do you recommend?

I didn't see anyone else mention this, but there is a Canon 100-400mm lens for sale here on UHH. Being a Nikon user, I am not sure if it is exactly the same lens as what you are looking at on eBay, but I thought I would mention it so you can check it out. Here is the link to the post here on UHH.

I buy my shoes online, a 14-4E or 14-5E depending on the style. If I find a style I like that fits well I just buy that same style in different colors for years. The walking shoes my wife bought online were Clarke's and she had bought that size from them several times and never had a problem. The design of the walking shoes rubbed against her foot and gave her blisters. We were walking, and a half a mile out we turned around and she had to walk home barefoot. This was the only time she ever had a problem buying shoes online.

You can't judge shoe fit from an ad, or even claims like you trusted. What you do is buy from a company that guarantees fit. I buy New Balance shoes that come in very wide widths....4E to 6E.....but only trying them ON MY FEET tells if they fit. The company I buy from invites you to send in a tracing of your feet to find the right shoe. Some shoes work in 4E, some need 6E.

Or else, only buy from an actual store where you can try shoes on. Unfortunately, brick & mortar stores do not have much in wide widths.

I just purchased a used Canon f1.8 85mm on Amazon from a seller called Tech for Less. He had a great price, lower than all the used ones available, had a great rating too. He advertised the lens as "Near New" and it really was. You might seek him out. Don't know if he's on eBay.

I like eBay and pay using PayPal. Only had two bad buys: a lens with loose insides though it worked but fished for focus. It did work and the price was nice so I kept it and used it for manual focusing on a tripod. The other item, simple as it was, was not as described (rubber anti slide furniture coasters, that were soft foam and slid everywhere!). Ebay forced the return cost and there was no return of item asked. But on the positive side, I buy many Mint lenses from Japan and they are perfect, though slightly more than some buys. I'm in no hurry to get it and mainly want quality stuff. I personally save a bundle getting older "D" lenses that work fine on two of my cameras. New is nice but saving two thousand dollars speaks for it's self.

PayPal. Pentax Cameras and Lenses. eBay, no problems. One lens had a front filter ring dent but I knew that and could see it in the pix before buying. The used price was about half due to the defect. Took a chance. Lens seems to work fine. I forced on a filter ring with the un-needed glass filter removed so I could put others on if need be. That was the only chance I really took, forcing an empty ring on could have damaged the manual focusing mechanism or if I slipped, scratched the lens.

I've also bought similar used from Amazon and from members of UHH. Again no issues. I'm careful with choosing a seller from doing so hundreds of time not just with Photo equipment but for music CDs, LPs, CSs, DVDs, Movie DVDs, Books, and so forth. I've had more issues as a seller, like someone bidding and the disappearing, and thus never actually buying.

Pretty big feet there. I need 12 to 13 in a 6E to 8E. My feet are swollen and thus have large girth.

I buy equipment off eBay all the time. You just have to know how to do it. Ken Rockwell has a pdf on his site for how to buy off eBay. Check it out.

Well, I have bought two lens from E-bay and have been happy so far. I looked for the reason they are selling, how thorough they are in describing the lens condition and usability, and how confident they sound in their overall approach. You can always take the lens to a competent camera shop and have it confirmed or denied for the described condition. If there is a disparity, you can always challenge the seller and/or E bay. Good luck.

Only buy from highly-rated sellers with a good return policy.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've used EBAY for a lot of purchases, electronic parts and some test equipment, but its been purchases of low dollar value and never photographic equipment. It looks like I can carefully look for a lens. I have one more problem. There are a good number of these lenses for sale. The sale prices vary by 2 to 1. After reading the descriptions and looking at the pictures, in many cases I have a hard time understanding the reason for the large price variation.

Large price variations could be an indicator or source or condition. I always buy from sellers with 100% positive feedback unless they sell large volumes then I settle for 99%. I always ask the product source - USA or not although that is less of an issue with Canon. I use PayPal. I have returned a few items without problems, so I still use EBay, but with caution on large dollar items. On the other hand, sometimes it takes a leap of faith. I got the first of my Nikon Dfs on Ebay for less than 50% of list price with only 653 shutter actuations from an individual. Couldn't be happier with that decision.

ebay also has a buyer protection plan, if all else fails.
