Hi Guys,

I feel way out of my depth here, but need a little help.
My Coolpix P510, which has taken thousands of photos, mostly in Auto, has locked up on me.
It turns on to the 'Time/Date' menu and won't respond to any command.
Removing and reinstalling the battery has no effect.
Using a charged Nikon battery and one of the tried and true SD cards.

Granted, it's not a fancy camera, but it works for me, usually.

BTW, I teach painting to adults and use most of my photos as painting reference. Landscapes and flowers.

Is it asking you to set the time and date? You could try that just as an idea.

If this doesn't help the issue might be with the internal clock battery or capacitor, whichever that camera has.

KEH Camera in Georgia sells good quality used cameras. Many UHH members, including myself, have bought from them with great satisfaction. They have several Nikon P510 bridge cameras in stock - two in black and one in a red finish. I suggest contacting them at KEH.com.

Digital cameras comprise an electromechanical device. So expect over time that a part may wear out or a connection may go bad. Something may become misaligned and stop working. Other failures can occur with such a device, due to its makeup.

You could take your camera to a photography store, if you can find one, for an evaluation. The manufacturer of the camera may offer a repair service. You could consider replacing the camera with a like one.

Good luck.

From your manual:

The camera’s clock is powered by a backup battery that is separate from the camera’s main battery.
• The backup battery charges after about ten hours of charging when the main battery is inserted
into the camera or when the camera is connected to an optional AC adapter, and can store the set
date and time for several days.
• If the camera’s backup battery becomes exhausted, the date and time setting screen is displayed
when the camera is turned on. Set the date and time again. See step 2 of “Setting the Display
Language, Date, and Time” (A26) for more information.

I just browsed ebay for that camera. They are going for $70 to $250 there. I have no doubt that the cost of a repair would exceed the cost of a replacement and KEH would be a good option to explore.

Won't respond to entering the time and date?
I believe my little Sony comes up with enter time & date if it has been sitting for too long.

Call Nikon. They seem to be quite good helping me on the phone.

I'll bet "bleirer" gave the solution above.

Thank you all.

It looks like I'll be in the market for another camera.
Tried charging the internal battery, but it seemed to 'disconnect' after a few seconds and never charged long enough to make a difference. Camera still only turns on to the menu screen and won't respond to any prompts.

Soooooo, I'm considering another P510 or the B700 - any thoughts?
I realize few on this forum are bridge camera enthusiasts, but thought I'd ask.

Thanks again for your help.

Any competent repair technician ought to be able to replace the internal battery at a reasonable charge.

If your camera has the two button reset, try that. On my Nikon they are marked with green dots.

I like this site for the camera sensor database. Use it on a pc though it is finicky on tablets, you can use the sliders to limit the price and click compact or high end compact. Click on a heading to sort. https://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/

Also I like this for hands on reviews https://www.kenrockwell.com/
