Has anyone visited the "ghost town" of Bodie, CA? This old gold-mining town is a state park, preserved in a state of "arrested decay." My husband and I live about 4 hours by car west of Bodie, and are thinking of making a photo trip to the area next week (if it ever stops raining). The eerie photographs I've seen show homes, a Chinese laundry, a bank, a church, a stable and numerous other buildings all maintained as if the inhabitants had suddenly vanished. The pictures have one thing in common: there are no people in them, making me suspect they were taken when the park was closed. My question is this: is it possible to take pictures of the buildings without including hordes of tourists or is the park simply too crowded? Thank you.

If people in your shots are a real problem you can easily remove all of them with about three clicks in Photoshop.
Take multiple shots of your subject from a tripod. Going by memory the process as I recall is: Load all of them into PS. Make all of them active. Go to File>Scripts>Load into Stacks>Medium. The people will be gone and your subject will be complete with no people. The trick is to be sure the people in all of the pix have moved cuz PS erases all images that are not in the same spot\t from pic to pic.

Many thanks to those of you who responded to my question regarding Bodie. My husband was lukewarm about the idea until he read your answers. Tomorrow morning the three of us (me, husband and Omar, the cat) are leaving for the Sierra.

It's also close to Mono Lake which has some great stuff to shoot, especially on the east side.

Tourist trap that has been shot a million times in my opinion. Nothing new to photograph there.

From a history perspective it would be cool to visit.

Everyone sees differently. It can still be shot with fresh eyes and perspective.

While it is a State Park, the 13 mile drive down a washboard dirt road keeps crowds down.

Finally, if you visit Bodie, you will be very close to Mono Lake, also a fine photographic opportunity.
I drove that 13 miles to Bodie in a one-ton capacity van with a wheelchair lift and the stiff suspension to support the weight. Driving that road was like driving on railroad ties. Took me over an hour to make the trip trying not to shake everything loose, including our teeth. That was back in 2005.

If you do go to Mono Lake be sure you don't sign up with the Mono Lake Committee to keep you informed of upcoming events. I screwed up and did and I'm still receiving requests for donations from them. Got another one just the other day and it's been years since I was there. By now I'd think they would get the picture (no pun intended) and take me off their mailing list.

A three photo panorama. Originally it had three tourists included but PSE took care of that.

Farthest thing from a tourist trap - No venders, no high priced parking, food - lots of interesting 'stuff' as well as 'old' buildings and machinery.I had questioned about the wells as this is so high and barren but was told the water table was not too deep but was often polluted by the many out houses.

Fantastic place to shoot especially in golden hours.. Never had any issue with crowds, just be patient.. Ive never seen a ghost town that was so photogenic. Enjoy! Then hit Mono Lake, the June Lake Loop, if you are up for a hike Devil's Post Pile, the list goes on an on!

That's what I thought. Tourist trap? Not when I was there. Nobody selling anything but that was a long time ago. If you want to talk about an old "ghost town" that has become a tourist trap just go to Columbia, CA. I was there many years ago and every building had a merchant selling trinkets or a restaurant selling food.

BTW, Harvey, in background of your fifth photo I can see the buildings that I have in the panoramic photo I posted just before yours.

I was there a long time ago, at a workshop that allowed us to go into every building. Got some great shots, but they are all on slides.
There are other workshops that will allow you to go into a few buildings, and most have a night sky photography workshop as part of the workshop.
That seems to be the biggest draw of these workshops. Don't think that there will be an option to go into all of the buildings again due to the State concerns.
