Having recently returned from a monthlong trip to Europe, I wanted to rant just a bit about the way the tourists seem to have no respect for anyone but themselves. They will walk in front of your camera, hold their iPhone up in front of your lens just as you snap, walk into you as your setting up because they’re looking at a cell phone or as the case in this photo, just totally screw with your shot. Yes, I can clone it out, but why can’t people just have some consideration. This dude just walked up and set his camera in front of mine while I was shooting in Venice. His shot could have been done on the other side of me, there was plenty of room that late at night. Took all I had to not bump him over the side of the canal

The local people are fine, but it’s mostly the hordes that get off the Cruise Ships that are such as#0/e$. And of course dipsticks like this guy.

I don't want to fight with you about someone else's rudeness, but, sometimes we all do rude things, unthinkingly. Many times I have seen a photographer with a camera push people aside, step on grass, or something else not intended for it, to get his or her shot. We all need to be cognizant that non-photographers may want to see what you want to photograph. So, don't block or hog a scene.

Just my opinion, sorry if I offend anyone.

I have seen it work both ways,,,very polite people going behind me or waiting for me to take the shot or saying Sorry when they realize they are in the shot,,,and rude or unknowing people blocking a shot...Have also experienced the reverse, Wife and I were hiking in some remote location in a park out West, the Sun was going down and We just crested the Canyon rim to walk back to our car...This was in the film days and some Guy who was very angry and the only one else around yelled, " Hey, Get out of my Picture ! " As We definitely were not going back we walked the hundred or so yards past him to our car...I felt like thrashing him and his tripod and camera gear, but as I always carry a gun legally, I take a lot of manure from a lot of people...I have also ruined a Photographers shot unintentionally, was canoeing in a Wildlife Area one Spring and Waterfowl were everywhere,,,,it was incredibly beautiful and in one secluded area I came upon hundreds of Waterfowl as they exploded into the air as I canoed across the area, only then did I see a camouflaged Wildlife Photographer concealed in the brush along the bank as he got up and started collecting his gear,,,I would not have ruined his day if I had known he was there, and I can only hope he got some excellent shots before I arrived....

You don't have to travel to foreign lands to experience this kind of thing. I have experienced similar things from Saratoga NY to San Diego CA, by people wielding cell phones and by people wielding DSLR.

Heck man, you didn't witness the problem. You are the problem. Gotta laugh when I see all the kettles here calling the pots black.

We can probably all sympathize. As others have said, this is prevalent behavior. When others are taking their photos, afterwards they look up and see me (with-or-without my camera) standing off to the side out of the way waiting for them to finish. They look at me like I have just grown a third eye.

As my father told me,"in a group of two one will be an asshat" I was in a tour of China in 2001 and one of our tour mates just overdid them selves, the rest of the tour did not like them.

I am not a pro but I do look for the most unusual, like walking down a dark ally to see what is there. Usually I was alone but all of a sudden here come this couple getting in the way and yammering on and on as if I was interested in their observations.

The problem may be the way cruise ship tours are operated. On a cruise my wife and I took last year around the British Isles, we stopped at eight ports of call in ten days. At only one port did the ship stay over night and allow us a second full day. Almost all cruise ships stop at each port for only one short day. They typically arrive in port just before dawn. By the time they are ready to disembark all the passengers going ashore, half the morning is shot. The ships typically sail in the late afternoon following at least a couple of hours getting the passengers back aboard. As a result, there is a lot of pressure on passengers, most of which have never been to the location and may never be there again, to see as much as they can in the very little time they have been afforded. It should be no wonder that some tourist that feeling the pressure of seeing and photographing as much as possible in a limited time frame may become oblivious to other photographers or act with short tempers.

Although we have been on several cruises and port tours, our British Isles cruise provides a typical example. Our ship's last port of call was La Harve, France. We had never been to France, so instead of taking the close by Normandy tour, we took the Parris Tour. It was a two hour drive to Parris, the bus rushed around the city. We drove quickly around the traffic circle at the Arc de Triomphe where photography was very difficult from the bus. Because the tour guide was narrating the tour from the front of the bus and we were in the back, we were trying to pick out one sight while she was talking about the next. As a result, I have a whole bunch of pictures that I have no idea of what they are of. The only real stop we made was at Notre Dame. There was sufficient time to photograph a decent amount of the interior. After that, it was back on the bus which drove by the Eiffel Tower over a mile away. A couple of us had to talk nicely to the bus driver to get him to agree to stop long enough to jump off the bus and shoot a few frames (less than five minutes) after which we drove another two hours back to the ship.

For the most part, photographers are an afterthought for the tour operators. It starts with the buses themselves. The majority of the new European tour busses have polarized windows that not only preclude the use of a polarizing filter on your camera, but also amplify reflections on the windows from the inside of the bus. Because they try to cram too much into a tour so they can say that you will see everything, the busses often fly past the sights you most want to photograph. Then there are the "photo stops". Depending on the tour, there may be one or two and they are often too short to get good photographs because there is no time to go far from the herd and everyone is climbing over one another to get a shot. Add to that the fact that there may be five or more buses from the same ship following each other and making the same stops at the same times, it is a wonder that there isn't more discourtesy.

My best vacations in Europe, mostly Germany, I rented a car, traveled at our own pace, slept where we could find B&B (Fremden zimmer) and absolutely loved it mostly because of the pace we could keep. Did Vikng Rhine river cruise and it was good, but still rushed.

"Photo bombing" is a prevalent hobby. Many practitioners abound.
Many a$$holes are just bred that way. ie: I drive from LAX to Tahoe for a reunion. A$$hole BIL hears I'm getting up early to take sunrise shots. HE gets up early to "keep me company", basically nattering to me about "unnecessary" hobbies. The Sun starts peeking. Camera on tripod. shutter 1/30, Nikon clicker so I don't have to touch it. When I take @ 30, I go over to peep my doings- and BIL starts throwing rocks in the water. He says a little action will brighten up the scene. ?!?! I manage @ 20 more with the clicker- I'm 5 feet away from the camera, so he's not moving. We walk back, most folk are moving about, and he announces the right thing to do is for me to offer him 10% if I sell any of these.
Yup. Sure thing. A$$hole me accidentally deleted *every* picture of him and his wife.
We're in the middle of the selfish selfie generation. Celebs stopped most of the meet&greets here- some a$$hole will run up, cheek to cheek, FLASH!, run off. Bozo ho, fresh perfume and lipstick, runs up, plants one, FLASH!, runs off.
Websites are full of duckfaces and full booths in restrooms.
A$$hole steps in front- "I don't see it- what are you looking at?" "The good side of an a$$hole!"
This is LA; we'll get people jostling for selfies at crime and accident scenes.
Just accept there will be a$$holes, a large percentage, and learn to go around them.

My daughter just came back from an Asian trip. She found it was half price to book a taxi for the day than to book a tour. She saw lots more at a slower pace.
I went to NY once and was waiting at the second lift on the Empire State. A couple pushed in front of us and took the last place in the lift, the lift attendant said he would be straight back. We had a discussion on our trip up. The attendant said the couple were German and for the 20 years he had been an attendant he said the Germans were the most impolite race on earth followed by the Dutch.
When in Asia (incl Japan) look them in the eye. An Asian will not normally misbehave if you are eyeballing them because they then cannot use the excuse "sorry I didn't see you".
Since I normally steer clear of any area that has boat people around I cannot comment about them but in any other areas the worst offenders are usually Americans who seem to feel that they are owed something so I find the above comments interesting.
My wife and I find that rudeness is exhibited mostly by tourists (all makes) who are not in their own country, BUT in their own country they are usually nice people so why anybody feels they have to throw their weight about outside their own borders is beyond us.

You Ain't Lying...

Around 20 Years Ago, or May 1997, I was at a Subway Sandwich Shop here in the Hollywood Section of L.A. A Small Bus Full of German People Pulled in the Parking Lot Around 11pm, After Some City Night Tour Around the City, they Came in Subway, & Took Over the Freaking Place!

There were Only 2 Employees in the Subway that is Still a 24 Hour Store Today, & these German Tourist Took their Damn Time Ordering a Damn Sandwich, at that Time, Because of the Language Barrier, & the Two Employees were Hispanic, & Didn't Understand the Little English, & German of these Visiting Krauts!

When Asked on What kind of Bread they Wanted, they didn't Understand?

When Asked on Did they want Ingredients on their Sub, they didn't Understand?

When Asked if they wanted their Bread or Sandwich Warmed Up, they Didn't Understand?

It was Just Bullshit with these Visiting Krauts, they didn't care about the Other Customers who were in the Store, & Had to Wait, Some Left in Frustration because of these Krauts.

Some of the Tourists were Rude to the 2 Employees, Demanded This & That! It Took Nearly an Hour, & My Bus was Rolling by at La Brea & Sunset at 12:06am, & I would have to Wait Till 1 AM for Another Bus!

I Got My Order in At 11:51pm, & was Out by 11:59pm, Never Looked back at those F**king Kraut Tourist who Took Over the Hollywood Subway at La Brea & Sunset.

You come to my Country & Disrespect me & my People, Throw your Goddamn Weight Around in My Country, & are Straight Out Damn Ass Rude!

I will Never Forget that Incident in 1997.

Be carefull of your POV here.
Of all generalized groups Americans seem to be the worst. I see both groups equally so can form a better opinion.
Nobody wants to include themselves when the criticism are flying.
With an Asian you can look them in the eye and they will move.
With an American you look them in the eye and be thankful that outside their own country they are not allowed to carry guns.
Please excuse me if I am being too harsh here.

Could the tourists have been Americans? I had a similar experience in New York City about 40 years back... my first encounter with really rude people.

I often see couples taking photos of each other at a scenic site and ask them if they would like to have me take a picture of both of them; they are generally happy for me to do this. I show them the pix after and see if they are happy with them, and occasionally take some additional ones.

I've been unknowingly inconsiderate myself about 40 years back. I was taking photos at a wedding for a friend and there was a professional photographer there also. My F2 and Metz strobe were triggering his slave strobes. He politely told me about the problem, and I became far more considerate. I had no idea it was an issue.

I had that Same issue at a Friend's Wedding in September 1988, was Shooting Some Shots of the Bride & Groom Giving a Toast, & Family & Friends on my Nikon Film Camera, an F-301 (N-2000), & the Photographer who was the Official Wedding Photographer, Hired by the Bride, had a Slave Light Flash Mounted on a Tripod, & when me or Several Other People were Shooting Flash from Their Cameras, the Wedding Photographers Slave Light Went Off, & the Photographer was Pissed, & Scolded Me, & Another Guy who Was Also the Friend of the Groom & Asked me not to Shoot anymore Photos Around him that he was the Official Photographer for the Wedding & Interfered with his Slave Light.

After the Wedding Reception Ended, the Bride & Groom had Left the Restaurant, & We were in the Parking Lot, Along with The Guy who he also Scolded, & Wanted an Apology from this Rude Wedding Photographer, & the Photographer Got Pissy, & told him " it will be a Cold Day in Hell Before I Apologize for my Rudeness!" & Also Said to him... "Take your Black Ass to Hell Jigaboo!"

A Scrapping was about to Happen, the Photographer who was White, & the Guest who was Afro American like me, wanted to "Cold Cock" this Rude Photographer for being Disrespectful to him & his Fellow Guest, who also Shot Pictures of the Groom & his Newlywed Wife, & the Photographer Also Said... "Get out of my Face Jigaboo!".

The Guest Lost it & Charged at the Wedding Photographer & they had to Hold him Back, the Wedding Photographer Ignored it & Him & his Young Female Assistant got into his Dodge Mini Van, & Started to Drive Off & his Drunken Buddies Kicked his Van, Threw Beer Bottles at his Mini Van, & the Guy Nearly Ran Down a Couple of Guest Trying to get Away! & Somebody Picked Up a Large Stone a Smashed Out his Back Window of his Mini Van, & the Photographer Kept Going Despite what had Happened!

That was a Night I will Remember, & the Wedding Photographer Later Moved to the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex, & the Guest was Never Question by LAPD over the Incident, & Lives in Atlanta.

As for the Bride & Groom... He & She Split After a Year, cause she was Caught doing the Nasty with an Old Boyfriend, & Was Later Pregnant with his Child, + She was Controlling Bitch also!

Exactly the same experience that we endured there last autumn. Mass tourism has become a money making curse.
