I have the Yongnuo 968N flash on my Nikon D7509 camera. I am trying to trigger the flash off camera, using my built in flash on the D750 as the commander. I set my D750 to commander mode, mode A, channel 1. I set the 968 to slave mode, mode A, channel 1, but cannot get the 968 to fire. What am I doing wrong?

Does the flash have more than one slave mode? If so, try the other. I had a similar problem with a different setup.

Using Yongnuo, perhaps? The one time I used a third party flash on one of my cameras, it short circuited the camera, and ruined it. I won't do that again.

Have you raised the flash on the camera? (I have often set up everything, shot, no flash, pondered and realised I had forgotten to raise the built in flash.)

You have to make sure that the front (red) side of the flash is visible to the built-in flash. If not, the built-in flash can't trigger the remote. I finally gave up on using my built-in flash in commander mode and bought a radio trigger. I believe your Yongnuo has a built-in radio receiver. Radio triggers can fire a remote flash up to 100 yds away.

I just downloaded the owner's manual for the flash. Is the flash set for optical slave triggering? Your pop-up flash should trigger it.

Potentially, the issue may be that the flash your using doesn't "listen" to the camera. You might solve that problem by getting a Godox trigger and receiver.

Your YN-968n has both optical slave (lightning bolt icon) and radio wireless slave (radio tower icon) modes. First, make sure you are in one of the 5 optical slave modes, and not one of the 2 radio slave modes since you want to trigger the remote flash with your pop-up. Of the three optical slave modes that involve groups and channels, avoid "Sc" as the flash will be looking for Canon commands instead of Nikon. "Sn&Sc" or "Sn" will work. The other optical modes "S1" and "S2" are common to most flash units and will not support remote power and zoom adjustments or auto-fp sync. As previously mentioned, be sure the remote flash optical sensor can see the pop-up flash.

Also make sure the output level for Channel 1, Group A on your 750's pop-up Commander is not set to "--".
