That is so tempting. I just want to get a little more reach but aware of the weight in the backpack. Is there any quality 3rd party extender that would fit? I guess my ideal would be the 100 to 400 with the extender, but up to $2200 For that combo, and heavy.

3rd party extenders will "fit" but no AF. Much better to optimize your camara/lens IQ and CROP and use well applied pixel enlargement software for larger printings - if needed.

Ordered the refurb from Canon earlier for $359 plus tax. Hope it works well with my old 40D.

Ordered the refurbished version yesterday. $380 incl. tax and delivery. A pretty good deal I think. I believe the sale ends tomorrow and the price for the refurb should go up $80 and new version $100.

Should work fine on your 80D.

I own the Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 USM IS. It's served me well for the past 10 years. The focal length is very useful, the image quality is excellent for a consumer grade lens, the auto focus is pretty fast, the image stabilization works well and it's easy to carry around. But it's an old design, makes a lot of noise and has always felt cheaply made. Plus it's kind of ugly. I'm considering an upgrade to the version II that came out a few years ago. Advantages would be lightening fast silent auto focus, improved IS and a modern sleek design. It can be had right now for $450 ($500 if you include the plastic lens hood with the Canon logo on it..Grrr)

My question is have any of you done the same? Do you regret it or was it worth the upgrade?

I bought it a couple of years ago. It's sharp, and I love the super-fast focus. This is a shot I took the day I bought it.

Great shot. Like your 15-85 paired with the 70-300. I envision using my Pentax with 16-45/4 for close stuff and the Canon for far shots. With 2 cameras on a double sling I'll look like a pro. Looks can be sooo deceiving. Lol.

I sometimes wish it was longer, but that gets into a lot more money.

I have had the 70-300 IS II for over two years and use it on my 80D (which I got a couple of months prior to the 70-300 with the EF-S 18-135). This lens is one of the prime reasons I made the move from a Canon bridge camera to a crop sensor DSLR. I shoot thousands of photos at the sports car races (and open wheel) and need at least a 400mm reach. I usually go with a good friend who is a Nikon shooter and has this big heavy lens (500mm I think) that I did not want to carry around the track. When I found I could get a crop sensor DSLR with this lens at a reasonably light weight and compact size, I went for it. It is also one of the reasons I doubt I'll go to a FF camera. I have probably taken somewhere around 40,000 photos with this lens and I'm very happy with it. Last August I took about 11,000 photos in two days at the races, most of them with this lens. Here are links to some recent photos with this lens: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-595591-1.html and https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-595733-1.html

I bought the JJC lens hood from Amazon for $14 and it works great at 1/3 the price of the Canon hood.

I've been thinking about getting the 100-400 IS II L series lens, but am resisting due to the size and weight, as well as the fact that I'm happy with the 70-300 I have now.
