Yes you make a good point.

But if you have the need then it can be critical. A team my son drag races with just dynoed their 521 cu in twin turbo door car at over 4,200 hp.

If someone needs a very high mp camera and has the $$$ I am sure they are happy to have it.

Yes, for drag racing there is no such thing as too much horsepower (unless it is limited by the rules like size of engine in the class you are racing in). Nitromethane burning dragsters and funny cars may produce up to an estimated 11,000 HP or more out of a 496 to 500 CID blown hemi engine!

My biggest thought is how long it would take for me to master it. When looking for a Canon 5DIV a year ago, I came upon a ridiculously inexpensive - used - 5DS (50mp). It has taken me almost a year to get to the same level of proficiency that I have with my 5DII. The additional mp's show even the slightest movement and higher shutter speeds than 'normal' are required to get a sharp photo. I often shoot the long end my 150-500 Sigma handheld at 1/400th and get super sharp results with my 5DII. The the 5DS, requires at least 1/800 to get marginally acceptable handheld. Which usually means higher ISO is needed also.

The noise from the high ISO tends also to be more pronounced at low light levels but this can be managed. I had to micro calibrate all my lenses to the body because even a slight back focus issue caused noticeable lack of sharpness at what should have been the focus point. This can be mitigated by figuring hyperfocal distance and shooting accordingly in some cases but for detail it was hard to get focus right.

PP also is slightly different and a larger/denser monitor comes in really handy along with more memory and more/faster cores. Then there is some limits to what Lightroom can do when making panoramas - tried to do an 11 panel panorama recently and after 2 hours of trying, Lightroom just gave up and shut itself down.

I know there are others who probably did not experience these issues but for me, its been an adventure. I see light at the end of the tunnel now for my 5DS struggles but couldn't imagine how much more involved it would be to 'learn to shoot' a 100mp camera.

I can certainly believe you. I've been happy for years with my 14 & 16 MP APS-C cameras, but yet I have not been fully happy with my 24 MP one as sure it has more resolution for pixel peeking, but it is unacceptably noisy at higher ISOs.

Look in the file types in Photoshop. PSB = PhotoShop Big (That is what Adobe calls them). It is right in the Save As drop down Menu where there are a dozen or more file types.

In my opinion there is absolutely no reason other than astrophotography or other type of scientific photography that 100mp would be needed by the average photographer. Waste of storage, waste of time, waste of money - but if you want bragging rights - go for it.

Yes, and imagine how much "retouching" you would have to do for female portraits at that resolution. People want attractive images not pathology skin blemish recording.

If I recall correctly, the SR-71 camera system could resolve 6" from an altitude of 80,000ft, doing that while traveling at 2000 some MPH.

Yes, the tale is that they could read a license plate at 80.000 ft doing 2000 mph. It was an amazing piece of work as he had to adapt a commericial lens to that camera set up. Apparently the feds did not sell the optics... Can you imagine that piece of glass???

My 24mp Pentax KP does a great job at higher ISO values

Jeep … when I made up that list, initially, it was of ALL Fujinon glass, currently available for BOTH formats. But, then - I realized ones with the X prefix - were for APS-C cameras, and the ones with the G prefix - were for the G series. I will give you just THAT portion, again, below, here. I have no idea which ones would be dispatched to you, immediately, upon receipt of your order, and which ones you'd have to wait on. I assume the OIS ones, might still be on the workbench, but all of the primes should be available now. That 32-64 is NOT an OIS, so, I should NOT think you would have trouble, getting THAT one!

It would be useful in some birding photography - sometimes it is hard to get a small bird in the viewfinder .... if you have extra pixels, you have a better chance of 'catching' it {that is why a D850 could be more useful than a D500 .... larger 'net'}

I can see nature telephoto photography this could be a bonus but again does the average hobbyist need 100mp. I shoot with 30mp full frame and get fantastically sharp images that I can blow up quite large if I needed to.

No amateur Photographer NEEDS more than 24MP - but a little headroom is sure nice to have, eh, Daniel?

Pros, though - who shoot full page spreads - such as the ones in ELLE, I'm sure - are happy to have access to 100MP … the higher the res you have, in that arena - the more spreads you can sell ….

I'd bet that these same 'who needs that many' questions were asked by the 4 or 6 MP owners when the 1st 12 MP cameras came out

Mr Breslin , agreed. For a pro making money to make a living, probably worth the investment. But I'm a retired old guy who doesn't want to go back to work . I just like taking pictures. The gfx100 piqued my curiosity because I was in Austria in the middle of fantastic mountain scenery, but I've calmed down now .

Some dream of 12 mega pixels
some dream of 100 mega pixels
Many can handle 12
Few can handle 100
But for those who can and are willing to try in the name of art
Who are you to judge
Embrace art
Embrace life
Embrace bravery
Embrace compassion
Embrace technology
For it is here now.
