Let me tell you a story ...
I was in the Nairobi airport, returning home from my trip to Kenya. I wanted to bring back something for my kids (I am a volunteer in a local elementary school) I knew I could not bring back animal bones or feathers so I decides to bring back some small rocks; three rocks, each a bit smaller than a golf ball. After my carry-on luggage passed thru the scanner, I was called aside and my luggage was opened. The agent removed the rocks and was holding them in his hand (not his hands - one hand). He had a look that told me he was thinking. After about 20 seconds or so, he called over his supervisor and handed the rocks to him. The supervisor also started thinking! I'm standing there, just looking at these two guys. Finally I told them that I was a teacher and that the rocks were something I was bringing home to my kids. I said "Their just rocks". The supervisor responded, "No", "They are weapons". At first I thought it was funny but it actually did make sense. I am sure the TSA has a list of items that are not permitted on aircraft - I'm sure that on the list is GUNS. It probably does not spell out specific guns, like 22cal, or 347 magnum - just GUNS. On the list these guys were going by, there probably was a listing ROCKS. It probably did not spell out the size or weight - just ROCKS. That is what was causing the thinking I saw on their faces! It's also probably why the first guy called over his supervisor! Should they allow me on board with something that was on their banned list? They obviously realized the rocks were too small to be weapons, but the list they were bound by made no allowance; just like our list simply says GUNS. Finally the supervisor placed the rocks back into my luggage; he buried them inside of some clothing so I could not easily get to them, then he let me pass through to the plane.
Let me tell you a story ... br I was in the Nairob... (show quote)

Comment not meant to be political just an observation. TIA (This is Africa)--often the regular people and officials of African (at least Kenya and some other countries) can exercise good will and common sense better than a lot of other bureaucrats around the world. I just love some of their down to earth solutions.

It reminds me of a movie from maybe the sixties. the main person was a writer and a friend used a camera like that to capture things showing things could be done. Cannot remember movie name but one actor was from the odd couple. With all the response someone else might have said just what I am trying to say.
I am allowed to forget 76 today!

I haven't heard THAT phrase since basic training. Thanks for that. My other memory from those far away days at Ft. Knox:

2 More Weeks and we'll be home,
Drinking beer and pissing foam!

And here's one from those days I tried recently, and failed miserably. Does everyone remember having to be able to take your 'gun' apart and put it back together? In the dark, I mean? I thought I knew the camera pretty good, so I tried that recently. The day had been rainy and there was a haze in the air. The street light at the end of the street, about 100' away, beckoned. The roadway was wet and reflecting the bulb's light. Wire's to and from the pole were wet and occasionally dripping. So I decided to take a series of shots from the porch, varying the ISO, Speed, and Aperture, one after the other, in the dark. Just like the 'old days'. Total failure, so back to the manual!

Just a 70+ year old newbie here, reading the posts and hoping that osmosis will kick in soon! As to another post today, my Canon T2i manual is pretty damned good IMHO. I have it on my phone so it's at hand all the time.

It was Most Likely the 1965 Movie Comedy... On how to Murder Your Wife with Jack Lemmon, Co Starring The Late Terry Thomas, Lemmon's Character was an Cartoon Artist, Living in the Naked City (New York), & he would Act Out his Characters in Real Life around the Naked City with People as Playing an Villain or Good Guy, Terry Thomas Played his Trusted Confident Live in Servant & he Would Help Out his Boss Acting Out his New Ideas & use the Camera that Looked Like a Rifle to get Good Angle Shots on Roof Top's, or Someplace Higher Up with that Rifle Camera.

Thanks. I was pretty sure it was a Nikon, just not which one. I'd be really interested in the stock and any mods you made. It looks like it might work well with my 1000mm lens.

Take off rifle stocks should be inexpensive enough to allow some experimentation. If you cover shipping I can send at least one, maybe two. I'll have to see what is sitting in rafters in my shop. Reply PM with destination info and I can estimate shipping.

The camera is a Nikon 810, The lens is a 200-400, F4, and the stock is an actual gun accessory.

I'm sure you have a remote trigger at the gun trigger point? And shoot in love view..... What a concept. I'd copyright it and sell them... Bet you could make a lot of money ..... Thanks for sharing you photos and idea.

Rifle like stocks for cameras have come and gone a couple of times in the last several decades. I almost bought one in the 70s.

Be sure the Air Marshall, DHS, or ATF sees it from the side before you try entering a plane with that. It would be a shame to have a bullet go thru the camera body and lens, and possibly your head. Sorry for the cynicism, but Police shoot kids with toy guns all the time these days.

I didn't make that device, and it isn't me who is holding it. I did pick it up to see how it might handle in real world use. I found it to be overly top heavy with that full frame camera and massive lens. Might be better off using a smaller format such as micro 4/3

Why do people spend money on things that increase vibrations in your images?

Because money never ceases to burn a hole in one's pocket

Speaking as a sailor, unless you are on a very large, stable yacht, that is one sure way to have your camera and tripod wind up swimming with the fishes
