I heard the new Sony RX 10 V coming out this fall will have a 1200mm zoom. Is that possible?

The current RX 10 version's zoom range at 24-600 mm, is a "35 mm equivalent," so we should assume any successor will have that caveat too.

And remember that the RX 10's "1 inch sensor" is substantially smaller than an APS-C sensor, so the crop factor is 2.7 vs 1.5 or 1.6.

Thus 1200 mm on a RX 10 would equate to 445 mm on a 35 mm or "full frame" camera. Impressive still, but not quite so spectacular as it seems at first blush.

None of this diminishes the outstanding features of Sony's RX 10 line up.

I'm waiting for the XXXVIII.

Models I and II went to 200mm, and II and IV went to 600mm, so a big jump is in order.

Anything is possible. But more importantly, WHAT HAS SONY SAID ABOUT IT.

I have a shooting friend that has the current model and uses it primarily for birds and at 600MM. The quality is remarkable for looks like a toy. The Zeiss lens is VERY good and 24-600. I'm changing my lens on my big iron and he already has the shot.

I have RX10iii. It has an 'extra zoom' feature which doubles the 600mm to 1200mm. It works fine.

I am still not sure what people are doing with all these 1200 mm (equiv.) lenses on the market.

It is basically a small telescope. Even if you are shooting a relatively slow moving object, like the moon, it is hard to get enough stability to be useful.

If you are trying your hand at sports photography from the cheap seats, for example, the movement of the stadium is usually enough to blur your pictures.

You would be surprised at the VR capabilities on these suckers. I owned a Sony that went out to 1200 mm and I could hand hold with sharp images using it a 1200. Now, professionally, I use my Nikon D850 with the Nikon 500 5.6 lens.
But, like I stated, the images I got from my little Sony 1200mm lens were quite useful, surprisingly.

I have the RX10 III and think it is a perfect zoom range that is sharp and has very
little corner and other problems some zoom lens have.
It does have the xtra optical? reach setting past 600.
What is frustrating is Sony keeps adding on versions that might be better.
If I had a 1000mm I would be on a tripod period.
This 600mm can be hand held and performs well at 600mm.
Most times I am at 200 to 400 for long sports shots soccer.
Can't go wrong with these camera's.

FYI: the Nikon P1000 has an equivalent Ultra zoom range of FF 24-3000mm with a small sensor.

A good friend has the P900 and a P1000. The latter lives on a tripod.

Might be tough with a 1" sensor, and the existing Zeiss lens is one of the features that makes this camera so good. I doubt Sony would replace it with what would probably be a very inferior lens. But ya never know, right? Sony has a knack for pushing the envelope.

Regarding comments about Nikon super-duper zoom offerings, those have an itty-bitty 1/2.3" sensor about the size of my thumbnail. My cellphone sensor is larger (and I can't crop worth a damn with it).
