Without red on the belly, wouldn't that be the female gender?
It is my understanding that the red completely across the top of the head indicates a male.
Fantastic shot in download of a male Red Belly.
I don't know the species of this particular wood pecker, but some years ago the National Geographic Society published a book about birds, "Birds of North America", and I have a copy of this book. Maybe I can find this one and let the rest of you know what it is.
This one is indeed the Red-bellied Woodpecker. I found the perfect match for it on Page #277 in
"Birds of North America", a publication of the National Geographic Society.

Thank you for the confirmation.

I think this is a red bellied woodpecker?
Good capture of a MALE Red Bellied Woodpecker!

Yes it is - a male. Their bellies, but rather more like their breasts have a rose-colored hue in the right light that varies seasonally. It really shows up if you get one with a flash.
The Woodpecker
Every photo I've seen of a Red-bellied Woodpecker has a white belly. Is that the female? If not, why is it so-named?

You can’t see it in this image, but it does have a red patch on the belly.
Rab-Eye: Thank you! I'm obviously no authority on birds, but appreciate your explanation.---

I’m no authority either! I depend on a good reference book.
